Breakthrough in the EU Parliament: Agreement on a compromise for the digital euro

The negotiators of the EU Economic Committee have cleared the way for the digital euro. These are the key points: Offline mode: Payments should also be possible without the Internet in close proximity (e.g. via NFC at the checkout or from smartphone to smartphone). Strong data protection: Thanks to Privacy by Design, no central transaction data is generated when paying offline - the principle is intended to imitate the anonymity of cash. Fee protection: Offline payments are free. For dealers (esp

Intermediary risk for overnight money via Neobroker

Hello everyone, the 100k state deposit insurance (per customer/bank) protects against the bankruptcy of the bank where my money is and I can prove it. With a direct bank this is clear. With TR/Scalable etc. the money is in escrow accounts at their partner banks. So there is an intermediate level, and with it a further risk: If the partner bank goes bankrupt --> the deposit insurance takes effect. It's all ok. If the neobroker itself fails (does not invest the money properly, poor records

Trump has squeezed China in Cuba, Panama and Venezuela. Is Nicaragua next?

US President Donald Trump’s drive to reassert US supremacy in Latin America has already squeezed China’s interests in Cuba, Panama and Venezuela. Now, Nicaragua could be shaping up as the next economic battleground between the two powers, a scholar has warned. The American leader has yet to target Nicaragua since returning to office, but that could change if China revives an ambitious project to build a canal cutting across the country to connect the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, said Zhang..

Financial neglect and disconnected reality of pensioners' lives

Here in the comments and from my own experience, I often notice that pensioners live completely disconnected from reality, while at the same time often complaining. I have uncles (85)/aunts (72) who pay a total of €90 per month to Telekom, which is debited in two amounts, for entertainment, internet, telephone, 2x mobile communications, and rent for a router that hasn't been available for years. Because they don't use Entertain at all, they pay another €15 per month for a TV cable connection to Vodafone

The state must protect you from your stupidity

Steep thesis as a headline, but let me explain. I think that Riester Pension and AV Depot are exactly what the general public needs to make provisions for old age. I know you are all incredibly disciplined, rational, responsible and liberal. But I think that many people, in their young arrogance, underestimate how stupid people sometimes behave in life. We recently had the bird here with the Thai wedding and the Dulli who is transferring his retirement savings into a sailing boat

The problem with Japan’s bid to strengthen energy security, supply chains

What is in effect Japan’s version of the Belt and Road Initiative is being rolled out at an accelerating pace. But unlike China’s global infrastructure initiative, which mainly takes the form of highways, railways and sea lanes, Japan’s project is all about energy networks and supply chains. It poses a further challenge to America’s waning economic and strategic influence in Asia, the world’s most populous, resource-rich and potentially powerful region. What is more, it is a cooperative venture.

Three social media platforms have been ordered to block access to 14 posts which “target the Indian community and undermine Singapore’s model of multiculturalism”, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Saturday. The police have issued disabling directions under the Online Criminal Harms Act to block access to the posts on YouTube, Facebook and X, MHA said in a statement. The direction required the platforms to “take all reasonable steps to disable access by Singapore users to these posts”,.

PLA says it will stay on ‘high alert’ after Dutch warship crosses Taiwan Strait

The People’s Liberation Army said on Friday that it had tracked and monitored a Dutch warship during its passage through the Taiwan Strait, days after using electronic interference during a confrontation with the same vessel in the South China Sea. The PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command said on social media that in less than two weeks, the shipborne helicopter of the Dutch frigate De Ruyter had “illegally intruded into the airspace over China’s Xisha [the Chinese name for the Paracel Islands] and...

Chinese pupils seek oxygen therapy to boost memory, reduce anxiety for national exam

As China’s most important national examination, known as gaokao, looms, many students are flocking to hospitals to inhale oxygen in the belief that doing so will “recharge” their brains. Gaokao refers to the country’s national university entrance exam which takes place between June 6 and 8 every year. Many people believe it can make or break a young person’s future since scores in the test will largely determine in which university and what major a student can study. In the past few years,...

Mainland customers can still open bank accounts in Hong Kong, but banks must adopt stringent new checks to ensure their processes are “compliant and orderly”, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) said in a statement on Saturday. “The banking industry has implemented the new regulatory requirements set out in the HKMA circular to ensure the account opening process is compliant and orderly,” the statement said. “Chinese mainland customers continue to apply for opening accounts, and in general,.

Child custody accounts are dangerous

I read here more and more often how all parents set up child savings accounts. Of course everyone only wants the best for their children, including me. Yes, tax advantage, I understand. But as someone who has brought three children through puberty. I would never in my life give children access to a large amount of money at 18. Anyone who comes here with "it's just a matter of upbringing" has either never had a 17 year old daughter or is incredibly naive. I prefer to have the money in my depot September

What does Washington’s latest AI chip guidance mean for Chinese tech firms?

China’s Ministry of Commerce has lashed out at Washington’s latest guidance on advanced artificial intelligence chip exports, accusing the United States of abusing export controls and disrupting the global semiconductor supply chain. But trade lawyers and industry insiders said the actual fallout over the new document could be far more limited than the geopolitical fireworks suggest. The US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) issued guidance on May 31, stating licences would be required to...

Russia downs 376 Ukrainian drones overnight on final day of St Petersburg forum

Russia said on Saturday it intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones including near St Petersburg, where Moscow is hosting a major economic forum, as Ukraine reported at least three people killed by Russian strikes.
