Cancel your old private pension insurance (tax-free from 2003) and convert it into an ETF or let it run without contributions?

Hello everyone, I'm currently facing a classic dilemma and would be happy to hear your assessments (also with a focus on the mathematical/tax component). Initial situation: I have a private pension insurance that I have been saving for since 2003. Due to the closing date before 2005, the payout in the event of survival would be completely tax-free. Most recently, the savings rate was €145 per month (including dynamics). I have now made the contract free of contributions and the savings rate in m

28M, just started investing, looking for feedback on my 84.5% Core / 15.5% Satellite portfolio

After spending quite a bit of time learning about investing, portfolio construction, and ETFs, I finally started investing at 28 and wanted to get some feedback from people who’ve been doing this longer than I have. My portfolio is structured as: Core (84.5%) VTI: 68% VXUS: 21.1% SMH: 10.5% Satellite (15.5%) ROKT/NASA (Space): 57.2% URA/URNM (Uranium/Nuclear): 42.9% My reasoning is that I want the vast majority of my portfolio in diversified, low-cost ETFs that capture broad market returns (VTI

Beijing deploys new missiles matching Patriots opposite Taiwan

Mainland China has equipped frontline troops facing Taiwan with a new missile, state media reported. The missile is believed to be an HQ-16F, which has comparable qualities to the US Patriot PAC2 and 3 systems. On Friday, state broadcaster CCTV aired footage of the 73rd Group Army’s first operational and live-fire assessment of the missile in the Gobi Desert. The unit, which forms part of the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theatre Command, had travelled thousands of kilometres from its base in

What do I do with my savings?

I will probably be moving out soon and expect to need around €5-10k for furnishing the apartment, deposit etc. This would give me around €20,000 in my account, which is currently only there (Sparkasse). What would be the most sensible way for me to invest or use this money so that I would still have quick access to it if needed? The more detailed the better please, apart from capital-forming benefits & a few thousand euros in daily allowance, I've never had anything

96 deals signed, flights planned: what’s next for Hong Kong and Central Asia?

Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu has wrapped up his visit to Central Asia after meeting high-level leaders and sealing nearly 100 partnership agreements aimed at opening the “big door” for local and mainland Chinese businesses. While reviving direct flights to the region was considered a big win from the trip, observers noted that the real challenges lay ahead as authorities and different parties must take necessary follow-up actions to realise the gains. Local authorities and businesses signed

Wan Chai temple and Stanley Mosque set for highest level of heritage protection

A nearly 180-year-old temple nestled in the heart of Wan Chai and Hong Kong’s only mosque inside a prison are poised to receive the city’s highest level of heritage protection under a government proposal. In a paper submitted ahead of a board meeting on Thursday, the Antiquities and Monuments Office recommended that Hung Shing Temple in Wan Chai and the Stanley Mosque at Stanley Prison be declared statutory monuments. Both buildings currently hold Grade 1 historic building status. “The two...

Reform debate: Does Black-Red still have youth in mind?

I'll leave this up for discussion. Chancellor Merz promises the young generation a good future. However, they often feel that they are not being heard. In your view, the planned reforms are largely going in the wrong direction. Merz is working on ensuring that the children and grandchildren can one day say: "Yes, they understood it back then, they did it right and they also made the right decisions." Some ideas for ETFs for a child?

I've been investing pretty much all my daughter's savings, buying VWCE. She's 10 and I've been doing it for 2 years now. But I've been thinking: given the time frame here, shouldn't I be investing in something a bit riskier? Isn't that what would make sense? This is money that won't be needed for anything. This is just something that will pass on to her once we're gone and that we hope she'll use as the base for her own savings/investments some day. Let me know your thoughts and suggestions. Tha

WHO warns nearly 500 confirmed Ebola cases in Central Africa outbreak

Nearly 500 Ebola cases have now been confirmed in the deadly outbreak raging in central Africa, a WHO overview showed on Saturday, amid mounting concern over the swelling scale of the epidemic. In its daily update on the situation, the World Health Organization tallied 452 confirmed cases, including 82 deaths, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), where the outbreak was declared three weeks ago. In neighbouring Uganda, meanwhile, it counted 19 confirmed cases, including two deaths. The

Hong Kong saves HK$69 million in first month after HK$2 fare scheme revamp

Changes to Hong Kong’s public transport subsidy scheme saved the government HK$69 million (US$8.8 million) in the first month, with fewer elderly and disabled commuters taking expensive long-haul routes for short trips, the welfare minister has said. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han said on Saturday that, following revisions to the concessionary fare scheme that took effect on April 3, the average government subsidy for trips costing more than HK$10 fell from HK$4.90 in March..

Is it worth saving money if you need care?

Unfortunately, I have a chronic illness that is gradually destroying my central nervous system. Even though I'm doing great today, it would be naive to think that I'll be able to work until I retire. It is also not unlikely that I will need care sooner or later. Now I heard from several places that care is really expensive and that the care insurance only pays when you no longer have any money. A friend's father had a house and a good sum of money

Snakes alive! Warmer weather brings flurry of sightings in Chinese capital

Residents in some parts of Beijing are on edge as rises in humidity and temperature lure snakes into the Chinese capital, where encounters with the reptiles are usually rare. Concerned residents have been sharing their sightings on social media. “Why are there snakes in Beijing’s parks?” one user posted. “It scared me to death.” In the comments section, many others shared similar experiences, with one woman recounting her shock at finding a snake hiding behind the fridge of her 25th-floor...
