Is it worth saving money if you need care?

Unfortunately, I have a chronic illness that is gradually destroying my central nervous system. Even though I'm doing great today, it would be naive to think that I'll be able to work until I retire. It is also not unlikely that I will need care sooner or later. Now I heard from several places that care is really expensive and that the care insurance only pays when you no longer have any money.
