Is the AI Bubble Popping? Here's What I'm Actually Watching

Oracle's 5-year CDS jumped to ~139 bps recently. Not a disaster, but it's a reminder that the bond market isn't fully buying the AI growth story. Microsoft has paused some data center leases and canceled projects. When hyperscalers start tapping the brakes, it's worth paying attention. VCs poured $270B into AI in 2025, but deal count fell to its lowest level since 2020. More money, fewer companies. That's concentration, not broad ecosystem growth. What worries me most is the circular nature of t

China team drafts ‘comprehensive’ sanctions list targeting US, allies on 63 tech sectors

Since US President Donald Trump launched a tariff war against China during his first term in office, Washington has steadily expanded restrictions on Chinese access to advanced technologies, targeting semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, aerospace systems, supercomputers and a broad range of dual-use technologies. These export controls are aimed at slowing China’s rise in high-end manufacturing and frontier science. But Beijing’s rapid progress in a number of...

UK publishes new Mandelson files, raising heat on PM Starmer

The UK government released a vast trove of documents relating to Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador, in a move that threatens to cause fresh damage to Keir Starmer’s faltering premiership. More than 1,500 pages of documentation were published on the British government’s website just after 2pm. They include emails, text messages and other exchanges between government ministers, aides and Mandelson in the run-up to his appointment as US envoy, a post he held from February to September.

Chinese EV makers recover in May but competition remains fierce amid overcapacity woes

Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in China recovered on solid footing in May, as new models fitted with higher-performance batteries and more advanced driver assistance systems drew consumers amid intensified competition. Zeekr, a premium EV brand owned by Geely Auto, the country’s second-largest carmaker, and Stellantis-backed Leapmotor rewrote their monthly delivery records, the latest sign that local government subsidies have whetted consumers’ buying appetite for big-ticket items. Although...

Fallen for credit card fraud

Unfortunately, I fell for a well-done credit card scam over the weekend. In the evening I was contacted by the hotel where we had soon booked a room that I should provide a credit card for confirmation. I hesitated for a moment but the link looked good - all the data matched. Name, date for one night, amount of money, etc. (called the hotel on the phone, they probably have a data leak - that's all I know, they couldn't tell me more) So I quickly brushed my teeth and...
