Repatriation of migrants without a residence permit
A reform was adopted in the EU Parliament that provides for new return regulations for third-country nationals without a right of residence. The aim of the new regulation is to simplify the return of people who are obliged to leave the country within the European Union and to improve cooperation between the member states. The new regulation stipulates that affected people will have to cooperate more closely with the responsible authorities, for example when establishing their identity or obtaining travel documents. In addition, the options for detaining people to secure their repatriation are being expanded. The duration of detention can be up to 24 months under certain conditions and can be extended further in special cases. Another component of the reform is greater mutual recognition of return decisions within the EU. This will make it easier for decisions made by one Member State to be enforced in other Member States in the future. In addition, the regulation opens up the possibility of using return centers in third countries outside the European Union, provided that certain legal requirements are met. According to supporters, the new rules are intended to increase the effectiveness of the European return system and reduce existing differences between member states. Critics, however, express concerns about longer detention options and the planned use of return centers outside the EU. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. Overall, the new regulation was approved with 418 votes in favour, 218 against and 30 abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 51 voted for and 31 against. There were five abstentions.
