The federal government has submitted a proposal to extend the participation of armed German forces in the EU-led EUFOR ALTHEA mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina until June 30, 2027. The existing mandate was last extended on June 25, 2025 by a roll-call vote. The aim of the mission is to contribute to a safe and stable environment in the country and to promote the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement. In particular, the Bundeswehr takes on leadership, advisory, observation and support tasks as well as contributions to the training of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian armed forces. The staffing limit remains unchanged at up to 50 soldiers. The operational additional expenditure for the mandate period is estimated at around 16.1 million euros. In its justification, the Federal Government refers to the continued tense political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In particular, ethnic tensions, political blockades and possible attempts at destabilization from outside continued to pose significant challenges for the country. EUFOR ALTHEA therefore continues to make an important contribution to stabilizing the country and supporting the EU accession candidate Bosnia and Herzegovina. The application was accompanied by a recommendation from the Foreign Affairs Committee, which recommended its acceptance. The Budget Committee also presented a report stating that the planned expenditure is compatible with the federal budget situation. The German Bundestag followed the recommendation of the Foreign Affairs Committee and accepted the Federal Government's proposal in a roll-call vote with 386 yes votes to 193 no votes, with three abstentions from Jan Dieren (SPD), Corinna Rüffer (ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS) and Zada Salihović (The Left).
