The Federal Government has submitted a proposal to continue the participation of armed German forces in the international security presence KFOR in Kosovo. The Bundestag last voted on it in June 2025. The Bundeswehr has been taking part in the NATO-led mission since 1999. As before, up to 400 soldiers will be deployed. Its tasks include supporting a safe environment and public order, coordinating international humanitarian aid, supporting civilian actors and advising on the development of the Kosovo security forces. The federal government estimates the additional expenditure related to operations to be around 35.7 million euros for the period up to June 2027. In its justification, the Federal Government refers to the continued tense situation in the Serb-majority north of Kosovo. Although the security situation has stabilized overall after the violent incidents of recent years, political tensions and the potential for escalation still remain. KFOR is seen by both parties to the conflict as an important guarantor of security. In addition, the Federal Government is pursuing the goal of a sustainable normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia as well as the further political, constitutional and economic stabilization of Kosovo and its rapprochement with the European Union. The application was accompanied by a recommendation from the Foreign Affairs Committee, which recommended its acceptance. The Budget Committee also stated in a report that the planned expenditure is compatible with the federal budget situation. The German Bundestag followed the recommendation of the Foreign Affairs Committee and accepted the Federal Government's proposal in a roll-call vote with 382 yes votes to 192 no votes, with two abstentions from Corinna Rüffer (ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS) and Zada Salihović (The Left). Jan Dieren (SPD) also voted against the motion, contrary to the party line.
