Extension of the Bundeswehr mission EUNAVFOR MED IRINI in the Mediterranean
The Bundestag voted in particular on the early extension of two Bundeswehr foreign missions in the Mediterranean. Both mandates would have expired in spring 2025 and have now been extended until November 2025. In a corresponding proposal, the federal government proposes that up to 550 soldiers continue to participate in the NATO operation SEA GUARDIAN in the Mediterranean. The mission is to monitor the maritime area in the Mediterranean, combat terrorism and prevent arms smuggling. There was a recommendation for a resolution from the Foreign Affairs Committee for the application, in which the acceptance of the application was recommended. The Budget Committee also published a report on the compatibility of the application with the federal budget situation. The federal government's proposal was accepted with 516 votes. 94 MPs voted against, with Kathrin Henneberger (B90/Greens faction) abstaining.
