Supporting a just transition and reconstruction in Syria
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution in support of a just political transition and reconstruction in Syria. The EU wants to strive to promote political change in the country and support sustainable reconstruction measures. In February 2025, the EU suspended a series of restrictive measures against the previous regime in order to open up diplomatic space for the transition process. The resolution aims to underline the need for a long-term EU strategy aimed at stability, the rule of law and the reconstruction of Syria. At the same time, the resolution problematises the ongoing tense security situation in the country as well as Syria's ongoing alliances with Russia and Iran. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. Overall, the resolution was adopted with 462 votes in favour, 76 against and 106 abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 64 voted for and 18 against. There were four abstentions.
