Law on the independent police commissioner or the independent police commissioner of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia

AntragpassedSubmitted: March 26, 2025Vote: March 26, 2025
Essential content

The draft law from the governing factions of the CDU and Alliance 90/The Greens provides for the establishment of an independent police commissioner's office in the state parliament, which is intended to serve as a neutral contact point for citizens and police employees. The aim is to create a low-threshold opportunity to report and clarify grievances within the police and thus strengthen parliamentary control rights. To this end, the office should be equipped with sufficient authority as well as human and material resources. Previously, this position was located at the Ministry of the Interior and did not explicitly address police officers. The responsible Interior Committee recommended that the draft law be accepted unchanged. The bill was approved with 101 votes in favor and 24 against. 51 members of the SPD parliamentary group abstained.
