Lifting of EU sanctions
The Brandenburg state parliament voted on a motion from the AfD parliamentary group that is directed against certain sanctions from the European Union. In the opinion of the applicants, these sanctions violate constitutional principles and fundamental rights, especially when they are imposed against EU citizens or citizens of states associated with the EU. The AfD therefore called on the state government to work towards lifting the relevant sanctions and to provide affected German citizens with additional legal protection options in Germany. As justification, the group refers to legal concerns regarding the EU's competences as well as possible restrictions on the freedoms and procedural rights of those affected. The motion was rejected by 49 votes against to 36 votes in favor.
