China’s new battery tech set to turbocharge EVs, energy storage

Next-generation Chinese electric-vehicle (EV) batteries that charge in minutes are expected to add fuel to global sales of the country’s carmakers. An EV battery that goes from a 10 per cent to a 98 per cent charge in under six-and-a-half minutes was the star of the Super Technology Day event staged in Beijing in April by the world’s biggest producer of batteries for EVs, Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL). Earlier, the world’s leading EV maker, Shenzhen-based BYD, unveiled a battery...

Can you “accidentally” incur huge debts with Flatex or Trade Republic?

Some time ago I saw a documentary in which a young woman apparently accidentally leveraged in her broker app and also used a loan. In the end she had debts amounting to several hundred thousand euros. Gamification in the app is difficult with such sums. Can something like this just happen at Flatex and Trade Republic? Flatex offers a loan of up to around €250k depending on the size of the deposit. At Flatex I always had my risk class after purchase

Japanese city closes 94 schools as hunt for stray bear enters third day

A bear roaming the streets of a Japanese city for three days forced the closure of nearly 100 schools on Monday, as dozens of hunters and officials searched for the animal. The city government of Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, closed all 94 public primary and junior high schools in the area after receiving more than 10 reports of bear sightings since Saturday – including in a shopping arcade. “We have vehicles out to areas where a bear was seen to make people aware and to urge people to stay...

Asian Coal Prices Surge as Indonesia Tightens Export Controls

Benchmark coal prices in Asia surged to the highest in almost two years following a government announcement from Indonesia concerning control of commodity exports, including coal. The new rules for commodity exports would cause delays in outbound shipments of coal from Indonesia, Bloomberg noted in a report on the price news, adding the disruption comes amid climbing demand for coal amid the summer heat that drives higher electricity consumption for air-conditioning. Demand for coal has increase

China sees record panda bond issuance in 2026 as foreign borrowers pile in

Foreign governments, international banks and multinational companies are increasingly tapping China’s domestic bond market, as panda bond issuance hit a record high in the first five months of the year. A total of 11 entities sold 14 panda bonds – yuan-denominated debt instruments issued by foreign entities in mainland China’s onshore market – worth 26.64 billion yuan (US$3.7 billion) in May, up 246 per cent from a year earlier and the highest level on record for the month, according to data...

Real-name booking planned for Hong Kong geopark trail to curb scalping, no-shows

Visiting the popular Po Pin Chau trail in Hong Kong’s geopark will require real-name reservations under a pilot scheme aimed at preventing scalping and no-shows, officials have told lawmakers concerned about its effectiveness. Undersecretary for Environment and Ecology Diane Wong Shuk-han told the Legislative Council subcommittee on ecology and tourism on Monday that authorities would not use a first-come-first-served model and were studying a ballot mechanism to prevent scalping. “We will...

Has a diplomatic feud prompted China to press pause on Japanese film and music?

A diplomatic feud between Beijing and Tokyo appears to have spilled over to the arts, with what looks like an unofficial boycott on Japanese film, music and books. China has slapped official restrictions on tourism and trade with Japan since the row erupted in November, but so far there has been no official ban on the cultural sector. However, the Shanghai International Film Festival, which begins this Friday, does not have any Japanese films on its line-up for the first time in 20 years. It...

OPEC+ Approves Another Oil Output Hike for July

OPEC+ this Sunday decided to add another 188,000 barrels of crude to its collective production next month despite the ongoing disruption in the Middle East resulting from the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran. The group has approved a series of output hikes totaling close to 600,000 barrels daily since April, but this has remained largely on paper as a lot of big producers in the Middle East cannot restore production to pre-war levels due to the continued blockage in the Strait of Hormuz. The la
