The return on the statutory pension is a bet on real wage growth

Complaining about pensions is a daily occurrence here, but the Council of Experts aka Economists and the Institute for Macroeconomics and Economic Research postulate slightly positive real returns (in some cases even ~2% real for those born after 1990) for the DRV. At first I think that's subjective nonsense, which is why I tried to find out what my IRR, i.e. internal rate of return, might look like for the statutory pension. Assumptions: - 33 years old now, started paying into the DRV at 26 - no

Trump’s US$1.8 billion ‘weaponisation’ fund is on hold, sources say

US President Donald Trump’s US$1.8 billion fund to compensate victims of alleged government “weaponisation” has been put on hold, two sources familiar with the plan said on Monday. The fund emerged from a legal settlement between Trump and the ‌Justice Department to resolve an unprecedented lawsuit in which the president had sued the Internal Revenue Service for US$10 billion over the alleged mishandling of his tax records. The US$1.776 billion was meant to pay people who said they had been the

Frustrated with Robinhood

HI, I am a fairly active options trader and I happened to sell Covered Calls a year ago on some stocks that ran up A LOT in the recent semiconductor bull run. Robinhood has now effectively put me on a Covered Call Hold preventing me from selling ANY covered calls on ANY ticker. This is so frustrating- I have been on calls with their account supervisors for over 4-5 hours and no one can tell me how much I need to unwind positions/transfer in. I tried to transfer my unencumbered shares out to my S

China’s SAIC plans to build first EU car plant in Spain’s Galicia

China’s SAIC Motor plans to set up a car factory in Spain’s northwestern region of Galicia that would be its first production facility in the European Union, the regional government said on Monday. Galicia’s leader Alfonso Rueda said his administration ‌had given strategic priority to the project, with an initial investment envisaged at around €200 million (US$232 million). The project, which includes a logistics hub, still requires the central government’s approval for foreign direct...

Follow Up Big Short Questions

Loved the movie and have read the book (and a few other Michael Lewis books) several times. A few questions: Burry, Frontpoint, and Brownfield made their profits by selling their swaps as they thought there would be a chance that the people on the other side of the trade would be insolvent and not be able to pay. Is that a correct statement? What really happens when a private/non-agency MBS/CDO collapses and the market price goes to $0? Let's say there are 1,000 mortgages in an MBS (or debt prod

Workday up 40% in seven days

Following Michael Burry’s recent analysis on his Cassandra Unchained Substack, market momentum seems to be swinging back toward select enterprise tech companies. Burry, famous for his contrarian market calls, published a multi-part breakdown of 50 software and payment stocks to evaluate where the industry stands. While he warned about a speculative tech bubble and overvaluations across the broader Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) landscape, his research made an important distinction: some companies

Are ESG ETFs peace of mind or impact?

When I buy an MSCI World ESG or SRI, I am trading stocks on the secondary market. The company doesn't get a cent from it. I minimally increase the share price of "good" companies and minimally decrease that of "bad" companies - the effect cannot be empirically proven. If you really want influence, you have to vote at general meetings. BlackRock has put more pressure on companies with a letter than all ESG ETF buyers combined. Counter-thesis: Maybe that's not the point. Send ESG ETFs

US targeting of Brazilian gangs is an attempt to sway election there, experts say

The US decision to classify two Brazilian gangs as terrorist organisations is a political one aimed at boosting an ally of US President Donald Trump, the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, politicians and analysts say. The gangs join eight other Latin American organised crime groups designated by the US as foreign terrorist organisations. But unlike the rest, they do not operate in the United States. The listing of First Capital Command, known as PCC, and Red Command, or CV,...

The Next Stranded Asset Crisis Could Hit Utilities

Can it be real? Utility stocks offer a super combination of high dividends, steady growth, and potential total returns that exceed the cost of capital? All that with captive customers and the government standing by to make sure it all works out that way. Too good to be true? What about risks? Risk in business has two meanings: the possibility of loss (or what might cause that loss) or the possibility that investments do not earn expected returns (or the cause of that underperformance). Utility p

Pentagon policy illegally banned transgender troops from military, appeal court rules

A Pentagon policy illegally banned transgender troops from military service, a divided panel of federal appeal court judges ruled on Monday in another legal setback for US President Donald Trump’s sweeping agenda. The majority opinion – by a three-judge panel from the US Court of Appeals for the District of Colombia circuit – held that the Trump administration’s policy was designed to exclude people from the military based on their gender identity. The ban will remain in effect for now. The US..

Turkey Looks to Create Azerbaijan-Europe Electricity Corridor

Turkey and Azerbaijan are looking to create an electricity corridor to boost energy connectivity between Azerbaijan and southeast Europe, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, said on Monday. "We are going to create the electricity version of TANAP," the Turkish official said at the Baku Energy Week in Azerbaijan, referring to the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), the first pipeline leg of the Southern Gas Corridor that ships gas from Azerbaijan to Eu
