Calls for faster rehousing of evicted Hong Kong subdivided flat tenants

Hong Kong authorities should offer more timely and flexible urgent accommodation for residents uprooted by a new regulation aimed at eliminating the city’s notorious subdivided flats, lawmakers have urged. Their comments were made on Tuesday after the Housing Bureau briefed lawmakers on plans to reserve up to 180 transitional flats in urban and extended urban areas to tenants evicted on short notice. Scott Leung Man-kwong, deputy chairman of the Legislative Council’s housing panel, said he...

Short-Term Investment Options for $10K/under

Hi guys, I've saved $10K in the last year and I want an easy place to let it sit and grow in the short term. I don't need a super high yield , but I mainly need the ability to easily withdraw my funds after 12 months, without significant delay or loss. (I'm an actor so my income can be inconsistent - I may need to withdraw to cover rent during a challenging month. I have enough saved to manage until 2027) I already have it in Wealthfront HYSA where APR is 3.3%. I've also heard of Target Date Fun

Why do China and other powers still want aircraft carriers?

Drone swarms and stealth submarines are playing a growing role in modern warfare, yet aircraft carriers remain a symbol of military might. That can be seen in China’s investment in the warships, as well as other countries including France, Turkey, India and Japan. China’s naval fleet has been expanding at a rapid pace, with its fourth aircraft carrier fast taking shape, according to the latest satellite images of the shipyard in Dalian in the country’s northeast, where it is being built. Is buying before Ex-Date In a LOW TAX BRACKET free money?

Let's say my income is very low as a retiree, student, etc. To a hedge fund or rich person owning a stock, if they receive a $1 dividend it's really not worth $1 because of taxes. It's probably worth $0.70, so the stock should drop by (1- average stockholder tax rate) * dividend amount in theory, right? if it actually drops proportional to the dividend that doesn't make sense in efficient markets. I would just sell before the dividend hits and re buy at that cheaper price to not pay taxes on the

I may have to die sooner than planned

Hello, I may be affected (!) by familial Alzheimer's disease. My father died relatively young, at 52. There is a 50/50 chance that it will be passed on. The test to see whether it was familial was never carried out. The disease is incurable and the chances of recovery are currently hopeless. The general tenor is that you shouldn't get tested because it doesn't help and doesn't change anything other than taking away all the joy in your life

What are the pros of opening a managed investing account (Robinhood)?

I’m 20M heading into my 3rd year of college. I have no student debt, and won’t. I am starting a new job as an RA and will not be paying rent as of August. For sure after August I will be having a monthly income of $1000. I have an individual investing account, ROTH IRA, and am looking at using the Robinhood strategies feature. Please keep criticism at a minimum… hopefully. I am really just looking for some straight forward advice. submitted by /u/theshortirishman [link] [comments]

In Japan, ethylene shortage may cause bananas to ‘disappear’ from dining tables

Japan is slipping towards a banana shortage crisis, the latest disruption linked to the Middle East conflict. The reason: the country ships in the tropical fruit while it is still green, then ripens it in rooms filled with ethylene before bunches reach store shelves. Supplies of the naphtha-derived gas are running low in an economy that imports more than 90 per cent of its crude oil. Japan bought about 1 million tonnes of bananas last year, making the fruit one of the country’s most important...
