Alibaba shares spike 12% in Hong Kong as T-Head chips, AI revenue fuel earnings optimism

Shares of Alibaba Group Holding surged to a high of 13.8 per cent in Hong Kong on Wednesday as equity analysts expect revenue to reaccelerate in the June quarter, driven by growing demand for artificial intelligence and narrowing losses in food delivery. The gain, the strongest this year, came before the company closed up 12.2 per cent at HK$107.5 (US$13.71). Rivals Tencent Holdings and Meituan saw their shares grow 3.8 and 3.3 per cent, respectively, while the Hang Seng Tech Index increased by.

A healthy economy isn’t built on asset bubbles and debt pyramids

In the animated Soviet film The Golden Antelope, inspired by Indian folklore, a magical antelope tries to save a boy from a greedy raja by promising him as much gold as he wants. When she asks whether there can be too much, the raja laughs: “You can never give me too much gold.” But when the gold begins to bury him, he cries “enough” – and loses everything. Today’s financial system risks repeating the raja’s mistake. For too long, rising nominal wealth, asset prices and the fortunes of the ultra

Beijing slams Manila over South China Sea claims ahead of 2016 Hague anniversary

Beijing has issued a lengthy critique of the Philippines’ territorial claims in the South China Sea, condemning its actions as “unlawful” expansions that pose a “grave threat” to the post-war global order. Wednesday’s report by a Ministry of Natural Resources think tank – its third within days – marks the latest move in China’s campaign to reinforce its position in the disputed waters. The push underlines Beijing’s rejection of the Philippines’ stance just days before the 10th anniversary of a..

Hong Kong women’s rights advocates and sexual assault survivors have urged authorities to close a loophole that allows defendants to claim an honest but mistaken belief in consent before a sexual act, warning that it could undermine proposed reforms. The Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women and survivor group We Are X said on Wednesday that the government’s updated stricter definitions of consent should also be extended to this long-standing defence. “If we agree that the...

Chinese profit-taking triggers record gold ETF outflows amid shift to equities

Chinese investors pulled a record US$2.91 billion out of domestic gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in June, taking profits as a stock-market surge and a strong yuan dimmed the appeal of the safe-heaven metal, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). Mainland Chinese funds were the biggest drag on Asia’s gold ETFs in June, “as local investor risk appetite continued to improve”, prompting them to turn to higher risk, higher return assets, according to the findings of the council’s report...

What is one year of my life actually worth?

Sorry, this will be a bit long: I, M44, am currently somewhere between Coast and Leanfire. As a result, I'm slowly having to seriously ask myself how much money I actually want to earn. If I just continued working full-time, conservatively I'd be in the Chubby FIRE range by the time I retired, but I don't actually need that much and the work is often quite annoying. [Here is the rough situation, if anyone is interested (otherwise please use this one

63 Million Barrels Of Crude Stuck At Sea As U.S. Pulls Iran Sanction Waiver

Iran was struggling to sell its crude to buyers in Asia outside China even before the U.S. rescinded overnight the sanctions waiver that allowed Tehran to sell its oil without penalties. The Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday prompted immediate U.S. reaction with the U.S military striking multiple targets in Iran and the Treasury canceling the waiver on Iran’s oil sales that was supposed to be in place until August 21. Iran’s oil sales could be constra

Changes underway in Singapore’s smaller opposition parties as leaders quit

A year since the dust settled on the Singapore general election, leadership resignations in two small opposition parties signal a period of post-poll recalibration after disappointing results. The once-promising Progress Singapore Party (PSP), led by ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) defector Tan Cheng Bock, was dealt an “existential blow” on Monday, analysts say, following the resignations of two central executive committee members. Stephanie Tan, 38, was a newcomer who ran in the election,...

Regarding the “waiting for a big dip to get back into the market” folks:

Is it possible that, because this market has been booming for so many years in a row now, there’s a huge backlog of dry powder just ready to pounce? In other words, any would-be crash will be muted and almost immediately bought up by the trillions of dollars just sitting on the sidelines. I remember reading that there’s “$17T sitting on the sidelines” a year ago, but it’s not a figure that’s talked about a lot. submitted by /u/pseudonominom [link] [comments]
