US lawmakers push for fewer tax breaks to reduce reliance on China technology

A growing number of US lawmakers see the tax code as a way to shift corporate America’s reliance on Chinese technology, framing economic ties as a national security risk, seen most recently in a congressman’s comments on Thursday. Representative Nathaniel Moran said on Thursday that business leaders must remember China is an “adversary”, arguing that the American business world remains trapped in a “toxic relationship” with Beijing. Speaking at a Hudson Institute event, Moran highlighted...

Putin is pushing Russia into an 'economic, political, and military abyss,' think tank says

For years, Vladimir Putin has had a convincing rebuttal to anyone who thought Western sanctions would bring his country to its knees. In the four years since Russia invaded Ukraine, GDP has stayed mostly in the green, its unemployment rate has declined, and average wages have skyrocketed. Even inflation has moderated sharply, after soaring to double digits in 2023. Putin has waved those figures at Western critics as proof that sanctions have failed to cripple Russia’s booming wartime economy. Ch

Ex-US Olympian indicted in what Trump called Reflecting Pool vandalism

A former Olympian was indicted on Thursday on a felony charge in what US President Donald Trump has called vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, where a renovation project he launched has been riddled with problems. David Hearn, a former Olympic canoe racer, was indicted on a single count of property destruction in a Washington court. District of Columbia US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Hearn ripped up recently installed sealant on the pool in “a deliberate act” that caused more than

Carney Backs B.C. Tanker Ban as Alberta Unveils Pipeline Plan

Prime Minister Mark Carney threw a wrench into Alberta's West Coast pipeline ambitions on Thursday just hours before Premier Danielle Smith was set to unveil details of the province's long-awaited proposal. Speaking alongside B.C. Premier David Eby in Vancouver, Carney reaffirmed that Ottawa will maintain the federal ban on oil tankers along British Columbia's North Coast, effectively taking one of the most attractive export corridors off the table before Alberta's proposal even reached the fede

UK teen rapists get detention after outrage at lenient sentences

Two British teenagers convicted of rape must serve time in custody, an appeal judge ruled on Thursday, after a public outcry over a judge’s decision to spare them detention. Lower court judge Nicholas Rowland in May sentenced the two 15-year-old boys to three-year youth rehabilitation orders, saying he wanted to “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily”. However, the sentences provoked a severe backlash, prompting Attorney General Richard Hermer – the government’s chief legal adviser –.

China signals openness to reducing gaping EU trade surplus as Brussels toughens stance

China told the European Union that it is open to exploring ways to cut its massive trade surplus with the bloc during talks in Brussels this week, according to multiple people briefed on the discussion. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao signalled to EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic that China was willing to consider purchase agreements covering European goods. The discussions touched on lowering tariffs on EU-made goods, in a rare sign that China recognises that its billion-euro a day trade...

I’ve been on autopilot for 3 years and just checked my account for the first time in a while

I set up automatic monthly contributions in early 2023 and basically stopped paying attention. Just opened the app for the first time in maybe 14 months. Some things I did not expect: NVDA is now 31% of my portfolio. I bought it in 2022 when it was down and then mostly forgot about it. I apparently also own Palantir. I genuinely do not remember buying Palantir. My total return over the last 3 years is around 94%. I am almost certain I would have done worse if I had been checking every week. Now

Bloomberg products for a small investment firm

I'm part of a small investment firm that has eight figures under management. I previously worked for a company where we had Bloomberg Terminal and Bpipe access. I was in touch with Bloomberg to try to get access to Terminal for this investment firm I recently started working with. Since the company just started, there's not a large public presence in terms of coworkers with LinkedIn profiles filled out, a website, etc. I had a meeting with Bloomberg and it went well, but the process later stalle

Iran Tightens Grip on Strait of Hormuz Tanker Traffic

Just when the oil market was getting comfortable with the idea that the Strait of Hormuz was reopening, Iran reminded everyone who's still directing traffic. Iran's joint military command warned on Thursday that all oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz must follow routes approved by Tehran or face an "immediate and forceful response." The warning, carried by Iranian state television, also cautioned that any U.S. interference in the waterway would prompt a "rapid and decisive reaction." Th

Bomb blast at Damascus cafe kills 9 near Palace of Justice, Syrian authorities say

A bomb blast at a cafe in Damascus on Thursday killed nine people and wounded at least 20, authorities said, in the latest challenge for Syria’s Islamist leaders as they seek to stabilise the country after more than a decade of war. The bombing – the deadliest since a suicide attack on a church last year – was not immediately claimed. It took place near the capital’s Palace of Justice, a key government building, sparking scenes of panic in the busy area. Ambulances wove through traffic with...
