Inside Gaza’s tent cities without a single proper toilet: ‘it’s humiliating’

In their bare-bones tent in southern Gaza, Mostafa Shaaban built his family’s makeshift toilet behind a curtain in a corner. He dug a shallow pit in the sandy soil, poured a concrete slab around it, fixed a bottomless bucket over the hole, then topped it off with a battered, plastic toilet seat. It reeks with a foul odour and buzzes with flies and mosquitoes only a few feet from where they sleep and prepare meals. Every week, Shaaban has to dig the sewage sludge out of the pit. But at least it..

Bankruptcy is not the end - sometimes it is a new beginning

A few years ago I never thought I would write a post like this. I had my own company with 31 employees. I lived for this for many years. Working days of 9, 10 or even more hours were completely normal. Constant responsibility, constant decisions, constant worries. From the outside, things were going well. Behind the scenes, however, the pressure was increasing. At some point came financial problems, debts, personal liabilities and ultimately bankruptcy

What does Singapore lose when the wrecking ball swings?

Tey Yong How remembers running along the shores of eastern Singapore as a child, the sea breeze mingling with the smell of sizzling seafood. Birthday dinners here meant three or four tables pushed together, with cousins chasing each other between the chairs as the adults pulled apart succulent chilli crab. “My childhood memories will linger there,” the 47-year-old said on a recent Wednesday evening of the seafood restaurants at East Coast Park. “Whatever may become of it in the...

Package foods consumer staples

I have been looking to add to my 15-20 core stocks with non correlated returns like Ray Dalio suggests. I was looking at Campbells soup, Kraft Heinz, and General Mills, as well as a few others in the sector. WTF is with these companies they have massive dividend yeilds and all the YouTube analysis hates them. Rick Rule says buy the hate. But they all have a mountain of debt. What gives? Im trying to find out why they took on so much debt. It seems like if its a company in the grocery store and c

Oil Market Flying Blind as Dark Tanker Traffic Surges in Hormuz

Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has collapsed by 90% to 95% compared to pre-war levels, analysts concur. Some oil cargoes continue to trickle through the critical chokepoint, but under increasingly opaque operating conditions, complicating the tracking of oil and gas flows and obscuring the visibility of how much energy supply actually reaches buyers these days. Traffic appears to have ramped up in recent weeks, according to an analysis of shipping data by Reuters energy columnist Ro

Norman Bethune’s story still holds lessons for China-Canada relations

I grew up in a classroom where the name Norman Bethune was invoked with reverence. Like every schoolchild in China, I could recite from memory Chairman Mao’s 1939 essay “In Memory of Norman Bethune”, which characterised Bethune as a man who had come from afar, who gave his life to the Chinese revolution, who embodied selflessness and internationalism. For years, I kept a poster in my office – the famous oil painting of Mao meeting Bethune in Yan’an – as a quiet tribute. As the years passed and..

Why Solar Power Is Booming Under Trump

Despite the Trump administration’s pivot away from renewable energies, solar continues to dominate new energy additions in the United States. Newly released data from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) shows that at the close of last year, solar energy additions were the single largest form of new energy capacity installations for the 28th straight month, starting in September of 2023. In fact, in spite of a broad rollback of Biden-era clean energy incentives since Trump resumed off

AI Boom or Political Play? Trump Channels Defense Funds Into Dying Coal Plants

The Trump administration is set to channel nearly $700 million in federal funds into the U.S. coal industry Thursday, invoking a Korean War-era statute to prop up existing power plants, finance new construction, and push open a California export terminal that has been blocked for nearly two decades. The centerpiece is $425 million distributed under the Defense Production Act to 13 existing coal plants across West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Arizona, Oklahoma

Pope Leo urges end to ‘polarising narratives’ on Spain visit

Pope Leo on Saturday urged global leaders to avoid dividing their electorates with “sterile simplifications” to gain popularity and called on them to listen to the world’s cries for peace, in a forceful speech opening a week-long tour of Spain. Leo, who has angered US President Donald Trump by criticising his anti-immigration policies and the Iran war, will meet homeless people in Madrid and migrants in the Canary Islands during a visit he has said he hopes will set an example to the world about

How China is turning historic African slave port into waterfront tourism destination

In Benin’s southern Atlantic coastal town of Ouidah, located about 40km (25 miles) west of the economic capital of Cotonou, China is turning a former slave trade hub into a busy tourist destination. The historic port once saw nearly 2 million enslaved Africans marched along the 2km “Slave Route” from the auction plaza to the beach during the transatlantic slave trade. On the shore, captives were passed through the “Gate of No Return”, with a monumental memorial arch now standing at the exact...

Cancel your old private pension insurance (tax-free from 2003) and convert it into an ETF or let it run without contributions?

Hello everyone, I'm currently facing a classic dilemma and would be happy to hear your assessments (also with a focus on the mathematical/tax component). Initial situation: I have a private pension insurance that I have been saving for since 2003. Due to the closing date before 2005, the payout in the event of survival would be completely tax-free. Most recently, the savings rate was €145 per month (including dynamics). I have now made the contract free of contributions and the savings rate in m

96 deals signed, flights planned: what’s next for Hong Kong and Central Asia?

Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu has wrapped up his visit to Central Asia after meeting high-level leaders and sealing nearly 100 partnership agreements aimed at opening the “big door” for local and mainland Chinese businesses. While reviving direct flights to the region was considered a big win from the trip, observers noted that the real challenges lay ahead as authorities and different parties must take necessary follow-up actions to realise the gains. Local authorities and businesses signed

Pension insurance break-even

How old do we have to be before we can break even with our pension insurance payments? Thanks to the obligation to have multiple insurance for several jobs, you can actually make a good sum and the emergency brake is only pulled at €100k gross per year. I know calculations from the company pension scheme. The boomers have grossly misjudged themselves and all boomers over 80 are now making a plus with a lifelong pension. Of course, this is available immediately for GenZ and Millennials

Financial neglect and disconnected reality of pensioners' lives

Here in the comments and from my own experience, I often notice that pensioners live completely disconnected from reality, while at the same time often complaining. I have uncles (85)/aunts (72) who pay a total of €90 per month to Telekom, which is debited in two amounts, for entertainment, internet, telephone, 2x mobile communications, and rent for a router that hasn't been available for years. Because they don't use Entertain at all, they pay another €15 per month for a TV cable connection to Vodafone

Mainlanders can still open bank accounts in Hong Kong despite new rules: HKMA

Mainland customers can still open bank accounts in Hong Kong, but banks must adopt stringent new checks to ensure their processes are “compliant and orderly”, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) said in a statement on Saturday. “The banking industry has implemented the new regulatory requirements set out in the HKMA circular to ensure the account opening process is compliant and orderly,” the statement said. “Chinese mainland customers continue to apply for opening accounts, and in general,.

Israeli troops kill 7-month-old Palestinian baby in West Bank car shooting

Israeli troops killed a seven-month-old Palestinian baby boy after firing at his parents’ vehicle in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said. Sam Fahd Abu Haikal was killed on Friday evening, and his parents were wounded while driving in the Tel Rumeida area south of Hebron City, according to the ministry. The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said the infant was critically wounded after being struck in the jaw by the same bullet that injured his mother. He later died of
