China proposes nuclear-powered floating island to reshape global shipping

A Chinese shipbuilder has unveiled a blueprint for a massive, nuclear-powered floating island that will serve as a container transfer terminal and a charging station for vessels. The floating terminal will be powered by advanced molten salt reactors that use liquefied salt as both a fuel and coolant. These reactors can store vast amounts of thermal energy and cool without the need for water. Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation, said the complex...

North Dakota Chases A Second Bakken Boom Through Enhanced Recovery

North Dakota’s elected officials are pushing hard to deploy Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies to boost oil production in the Bakken before Donald Trump's tenure as president expires. The Trump administration has significantly opened up federal lands and offshore waters for oil and gas drilling, rolling back Biden-era conservation rules to mandate more quarterly lease sales. And proposals have been advanced to expand offshore drilling to areas previously restricted, including the federal w

Why nobody talks about this?

Im not sure which subreddit to post this in... If I'm looking to buy real estate, let's say a property cost 400k. I get a 30yr loan at 6%. the real price of the home is closer to 850k. You paid 450k in intrest for a 400k home(400+450=850). lets assume you sell the house for 600k. did you profit 200k or did you loose 250k? Maybe if you get someone else to pay the rent for you over 30 years it "feels" diffrerent but the math is the same. I somewhat understand that with inflation and leverage it ca

Rotation into consumer staples/defensives - best plays?

Hi all, I think these IPOs are going to create some wide macro issues along with the rest of the broader climate. Inflation, jobs, social sentiment to AI, etc. I was looking into HRL and EL. They are both potentially poised for a rebound if there is significant rotation out of AI. But I've also been hearing ABT, NEE, PEP, TMO. What do you guys think are the best plays over the next 3 years? Open to opinions other than "AI only go up". submitted by /u/deeptones [link] [comments]

Iran's Oil Exports Collapse to Six-Year Low as Blockade Tightens

Iran's oil exports fell to their lowest level in at least six years in May as the U.S. naval blockade continued to choke off crude shipments and leave tens of millions of barrels stranded at sea. According to shipping data from Vortexa, Iran exported just 209,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and condensate in May, down from 1.34 million bpd in April and nearly 1.9 million bpd in March. Kpler had estimated May exports slightly higher at 260,000 bpd, but still the lowest level since the heig

Are government bonds largely uninteresting for private investors?

I've always looked at bonds peripherally and never really understood what the advantage actually was. Many older investment books mention short-term bonds as a risk class 2 admixture, but the interest rates on short-term federal bonds are lower than many call money accounts, even though interest rate increases are expected in June. What am I missing? When is it worth investing in bonds instead of simply overnight money? Or are bonds currently a

U.S. Oil Shocks Don't Hit Like They Used To, Fed Study Finds

The United States still feels oil shocks. It just doesn't feel them the way it did when America was dancing to disco and waiting in gas lines. If the Fed is right, the idea that every oil shock leads to recession is outdated. A new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston finds that rising domestic oil production has fundamentally changed how higher crude prices ripple through the U.S. economy. The result is a country that remains vulnerable to energy inflation but is far less likely to suf

Central Banks Bought Less Gold in 2025 But It Still Hit a 45 Year High

Gold saw a significant price rally over the course of 2025, after geopolitical uncertainty and heightened central bank buying drove more people to the safe haven asset. Gold prices rallied 44 per cent last year, reaching $4,550 per ounce in December and recording 56 fresh record highs according to the latest report from Metals Focus. It also marked the asset's strongest performance since 1980. The report credited the sharp rise to concerns surrounding global growth, inflation and supply chains,

Hypothesis: Aging will be solved by inflation

The state no longer has many options to address aging. It is too late to convert the pension from the pay-as-you-go system to something else. But if a worker has to feed more and more pensioners, then working becomes less and less worthwhile and this leads to a vicious circle. If he decides to use his time for something else, then he earns less, which leads to lower payments, which then leads to an increase in contributions, which then means no work

Convincing parents to invest

Hi all, As the title goes, how do I convince my parents to invest? Luckily they have a decent pension fund that may be just enough to sustain living back in our home country which I would consider LCOL. However, my issue is that they are just cash savers. No other investments and they cannot grasp the value of investing. I’ve tried explaining the effects of inflation and that there are other investing opportunities that are low risk but they just don’t get it. They are retiring in about 5 years

What to do with the Riester?

I had a Riester contract talked into me 15 years ago. That was probably a good thing because otherwise I would have spent the money. Know my then-self. In the last few months I have started to think more about my finances. Saving now runs on different levels and is 100% under my control. Well, what do I do with the old Riester? I was a low earner or non-earner 90% of the time with correspondingly small contributions, I contributed c

Are Japan-Philippines talks a maritime red line for China’s blue-water ambitions?

Beijing’s strong opposition to maritime boundary talks between Manila and Tokyo reflects growing wariness over a shifting balance of power in the western Pacific. And, experts warn, these talks – part of a highly calculated geopolitical effort by US allies – could reinforce the so-called first island chain and restrict Beijing’s naval access in an area vital to any potential conflict over Taiwan: its clear red line. Tensions have sharpened since Japan and the Philippines announced last week that

Where does lifestyle inflation start?

This is a question I've been asking myself a lot lately. The much-quoted lifestyle inflation. When you really start to think about it, the boundary is kind of unclear to me. We (normal people) all start with a small budget. No matter whether you are an apprentice, a student or a career changer. The budget is tight. You live in a shared room or at home, you eat cheaply at home, take public transport, cycle, camp, etc. So many people live a good life on a tight budget. Cool at 22, but w

AirAsia denies Philippine flight grounding claims, slams ‘smear campaign’

AirAsia X has called recent media reports claiming its Philippine operations were being grounded “coordinated and sensationalised” and part of a “deliberate smear campaign”. In a statement, the airline group said the smear campaign had long been occurring in an attempt to undermine fair competition in the Philippine aviation sector. “Such narratives serve only the interests of those seeking to limit consumer choice and create conditions that could lead to a monopoly in the market,” it said. “A..

Increased AI bear sentiment and rotation into defensives is a contrarian bull signal, not confirmation of a top

The last two weeks I've seen more "AI bubble" posts, YouTube videos, and finance threads than the past six months combined. Traders in my circle are rotating back into dividend stocks and industrials. Defensive portfolios are suddenly cool again. And I think this is the signal most people are misreading. Bubbles don't burst when everyone's nervous. They burst when every taxi driver, barber, and college student is leveraged long on the theme. We are nowhere near that. I don't know a single person

23 injured after minibus, double-decker and truck collide on Hong Kong highway

More than 20 people were injured in a traffic accident involving two public buses and a truck in Hong Kong’s New Territories, temporarily closing an arterial road on Thursday morning. A minibus, a double-decker bus and a truck collided on Fanling Highway at around 8am, trapping the minibus driver, who was later rescued by firefighters. No pain, no gain? Former player defends ‘unique’ method of coach seen slapping student

A former student of a well-known Hong Kong basketball coach, seen in a video slapping a young player, has defended his disciplinary approach as acceptable despite legal experts warning the conduct could constitute common assault. Veteran coach Yung Kam-wah apologised on Tuesday over the incident two years ago, after the video recently went viral and sparked public concern. In the clip, Yung first takes a jacket from the boy’s hand and throws it to the ground, then grabs the student’s left hand..

Europe Scrambles to Contain the Energy Shock

The European Union and the Eurozone are feeling the energy shock as the Iran war enters its fourth month. The spike in oil and gas prices amid the Middle East crisis is raising inflation and moderating economic growth expectations in the EU and the Euro area, which are grappling with the second energy crisis in four years. Comparisons with the 2022 inflation and gas supply shock in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine are flawed as circumstances are different and the likelihood of runaway
