Philippines’ belligerence towards China out of step with Asean trend

The Philippines’ confrontational approach to maritime territorial disputes, such as its championing of the 2016 South China Sea arbitration ruling, has not only failed to resolve regional tensions, it also risks undermining Asean centrality. In May, addressing Japan’s National Diet, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr announced that Manila would mark the ruling’s 10th anniversary in July, an occasion he said “embodies our determination to resolve disputes through peaceful means”. That is..

Anyone with 529 to Roth rollovers?

There’s a grey area since the IRS hasn’t issued official guidance, so nobody actually can know the answer, but here’s my situation. I split my daughters 529, which has been open for 17 years, into 3 accounts. One for me, the wifey and the daughter with about $150k in each. I split them so I can roll over a total of $105k tax free. $35k per person into those respective accounts. The IRS text is hard to interpret. Technically, it reads that the account needs to be open for at least 15 years. If th

can someone explain what happened friday because that was insane

okay so i've been following the markets for a while and friday genuinely caught me off guard. s&p down 2.6%, nasdaq down over 4% in a single day. haven't seen that since the tariff chaos last year. from what i understand the jobs report came in way too strong which spooked everyone into thinking the fed might hike rates again. that alone would've been enough but then chip stocks just completely fell apart. marvell down 13%, micron down 13%, amd nearly 11%. nvidia got dragged down 6% for basicall

How can I pass on my TR portfolio?

Good evening, I'm in my early 20s and have been having worsening heart problems lately. Long story short, I have a large sum of money on TR. A part in stocks/ETFs and what I need to be able to cover all the costs (apartment, car...) for a year in cash because of the interest. Now to my question: How can I ensure that, in the worst case scenario, my money/shares are passed on to my family so that they don't have to pay for my costs? I have concerns about the log

Elon Musk becomes world’s first trillionaire after SpaceX IPO

In a post on the social media platform he owns, Elon Musk recently lamented: “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about.” Now the world’s richest person can put that maxim to an even bigger test as he adds a new title: world’s first trillionaire. SpaceX shares opened at US$150 each, 11 per cent above their offering price after they began trading in New York on Friday, valuing the rocket and AI-company Musk founded at roughly US$2 trillion. His fortune now.

£210k to invest - I narrowed down to 2, max 3 ETFs, wanted to discuss (90% goes to All-World, rest something for “fun”)

Hi Everyone, After a week of heavy research I think I have finally narrowed down to ETFs I want to invest in. Wanted to ask about final opinion as this Sub was very helpful. I invest in GBP in the UK but these are popular ETFs with Euro equivalent too. 1) £180k – either SWDA or ACWI, the difference is in annual fee 0.2% for BlackRock SWDA or 0.12% for ACWI from State Street. I understand both are the most popular (along with Vanguard) and reputable Global ETFs. 2) £10k-£15k – AVWS – I wasn’t thi

Question on converting traditional IRA into Roth IRA?

My company was recently bought out and I missed the window to convert my 401k into the new employers 401k. The money in my old 401k was then placed in a traditional IRA in an extremely conservative fund. About $70k. I have a Roth IRA account through a separate vendor with about $30k in it. I am wondering if it would be worth it to convert the $70k into my existing Roth IRA account so that I could take advantage of the compounding interest? Or should I keep it as a traditional IRA? I am s

My kebab now costs €8.50. My first payment in February 2019 was €4.50.

That's almost 100% price increase in 7 years. I could just see how the price has changed in my banking app. February 2019: €4.50 August 2019: €5 August 2021: €6 August 2022: €7 January 2024: €8 June 2026: €8.50 The kebab is pretty stable, so it's more of a premium range. Nevertheless, it has actually remained the same since 2018. Now I just pay twice as much for a product that has remained the same. There was probably still a lot of undeclared work in 2018, but it is

China’s ban on Philippine defence chief and family seen as warning shot to Manila

China’s decision to ban Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jnr and his family from Chinese territory has taken Beijing’s maritime feud with Manila into unusually personal territory, with analysts saying the move appeared aimed at warning other Philippine officials against taking a hard line. The sanctions, announced by China’s foreign ministry on Thursday following Teodoro’s recent criticism of Beijing, also prohibit Chinese organisations and individuals from engaging in transactions,

India Accuses West of Double Standards Over U.S. Russia Oil Sanctions

The on-and-off U.S. sanctions on Russian oil and the flipping U.S. position regarding India’s oil purchases from Russia highlight the double standards of the Western nations, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. India turned en masse to Russian oil in 2022, when the U.S. and the EU imposed sanctions on Moscow due to the invasion of Ukraine. Four years later, India is a major buyer of Russia’s crude and Russia is India’s single-largest oil supplier. “At that time, the US specifica

‘Not a crackdown’: China regulators signal more neutral enforcement in shift from 2021

Chinese regulators are stepping up public enforcement against the nation’s corporate giants, marking a departure from the low-key approach adopted after a bruising 2021 tech crackdown. In recent months, agencies have summoned company representatives, launched high-profile investigations, and named and shamed offenders. However, while the uptick in activity has rattled investors, some analysts and observers contend that this does not herald a return to China’s heavy-handed campaign that...

Why US and China are watching Philippines’ Marcos Jnr at Russia-Asean talks

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr will travel to Russia next week for a summit with Moscow and Southeast Asian leaders, a visit analysts say will allow Manila to show it can fulfil its role as Asean chair and keep diplomatic channels open with major powers despite closer security ties with Washington. While the trip is unlikely to signal a shift in Philippine foreign policy, observers say it will be watched closely in Washington and Beijing for any concrete outcomes on energy,...

In Malaysia, over 1,000 Orang Asli rally for land rights: ‘we’re not going anywhere’

More than 1,000 Orang Asli, the indigenous people of Peninsular Malaysia, rallied outside a federal ministry in Putrajaya on Friday in a rare mass protest to demand recognition of their ancestral land and an end to evictions and development on their territories. Many wore traditional headgear as they marched through Malaysia’s administrative capital, carrying signs reading “Orang Asli are not immigrants”, “Respect the Orang Asli right to self-determination” and “Our voices will not be...

Hong Kong retiree gets 40 hours of community service for slapping 5-year-old boy

A Hong Kong retiree has received 40 hours of community service for slapping a five-year-old boy who threw a tantrum and berated his domestic helper at a shopping centre earlier this year. Lok Kam-ming, 61, returned to Tuen Mun Court on Friday to be sentenced for what his lawyer described as an incident arising from the “unfortunate encounter” between him and a child whom he first met at Grand Yoho in Yuen Long on January 8. Lok, who pleaded guilty last month to assault occasioning actual bodily.
