Europe's highest dividend payers, and the dynamic behind why they pay so much

Disclosure: I work at Obermatt, a Swiss equity research firm, sharing this because it's a useful angle for anyone building dividend income into a portfolio. Pulled the European stocks sitting at the very top of Obermatt's Dividend Yield rank, and what stood out wasn't the yields themselves, it was what these companies actually do. A carmaker, a fleet of oil-product tankers, a tobacco-distribution network covering most of Southern Europe, a water utility in the southwest of England. Mature, cash-

Shipping Costs Soar as Hormuz Crisis Reshapes Global Trade

The Middle East war has upended global shipping, raising bunker fuel costs, altering trade routes, and forcing shippers and their container cargo customers to adapt to a new reality. Soaring costs of marine fuels have brought forward the peak cargo shipping season to the spring, ahead of additional fuel costs that vessel owners will roll into annual contracts as of July 1. As a result of the expected higher fuel costs and in anticipation of potentially higher U.S. tariffs on imported goods as of

High Tanker Rates Disrupt Persian Gulf Oil Shipments to Asia

The biggest state-owned refiners in China and India have failed to procure supertankers to load crude from the Persian Gulf later in June as tanker rates are too high and guarantees on safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz lacking, Reuters reported on Thursday, quoting company and shipping sources. In the past few days, energy giant PetroChina has received six offers in a tender to procure a very large crude carrier (VLCC) to load Basrah crude from Iraq. PetroChina did not like any of the of

The job market is pretty bad right now and I don't feel confident that I can secure another job in less than 6 months if for some reason I get laid o

Why haven't IRA limits kept up with inflation? original $1500 limit in 1974= $10,132.45 today

The IRA was created in 1974 with an annual limit of $1500, which adjusted for inflation is equivalent to $10,132.45 today, however the current IRA limit is $7500. That was for all ages too. Even the catch up contribution limit boost today is at $8600. still below the original dollar value. Shouldn't we have at least the same contribution limit as our grandparents did? I mean I guess if you want to say the original dollar amount was arbitrary and we shouldn't base today's limits on that, but it s

China tests future of shipping on its next major trade corridor: a US$10 billion canal

Trials are under way in China to roll out autonomous navigation and other smart shipping solutions to slash logistics costs ahead of the opening of the landmark Pinglu Canal, which will link its landlocked southwestern regions to Southeast Asia to spur trade and connectivity. Intelligent barges and other vessels have been tested on the artificial waterway in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region since Wednesday, as part of preparations for the commissioning of the roughly US$10 billion...
