I'm looking to move parts of my future earnings in safer asset(s), for the purpose of preserving wealth. I'm seeing the wisdom of the crowds.

I don't know what the markets will do in a week let alone in a year or 5 years from now. I don't want to this conversation to turn into a "you don't know what you don't know" type of affair. Assume for the sake of discussion that the market will take a turn for the worse in 3 to 5 years. I work in IT, as a lot of people on reddit do. I'm almost 40. The job market is pretty bad right now and I don't feel confident that I can secure another job in less than 6 months if for some reason I get laid o
