Schwab investments stuck in payroll?

Hi, I am new to investments. I recently parted ways with a job who had 401k and options through payroll, tjey had no clue what they were doing, locked me out of my account, tried breaking into it fron their end while I was trying to get into it and got it locked. I’ve been getting emails about the money I had in there from the time I was there, I can’t get it out. I was told I could leave it there by the employer and apparently you cannot.
