Apple loses challenges against EU rules to curb Big Tech

Apple lost its challenge on Wednesday against landmark EU rules that designate its app stores and operating system iOS as gatekeepers subject to obligations aimed at giving rivals more room to compete. The EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), which sets out a list of dos and don’ts ‌for Big Tech with the threat of fines of as much as 10 per cent of a company’s global annual turnover, has triggered legal challenges by Apple, Meta and ByteDance since it took effect in May 2023. The ruling by the...

Repayment of family loans from non-EU countries

Since Corona, we have gotten our family in non-EU countries through a difficult time with > 100k. So every few months over several years a few k were sent via Wise from the same bank account (only wages + credit, no cash deposits) to the same recipient abroad. French court opens door to Le Pen presidential run, with ankle tag

A French appeal court on Tuesday upheld Marine Le Pen’s conviction for misusing EU funds but shortened her ban on running for public office, in theory preserving a path for the far-right leader to run in the 2027 presidential election. However, ‌the court also sentenced Le Pen to a three-year jail term: two suspended and one with an electronic ankle tag. This would make a presidential campaign politically and logistically difficult, and casts doubt on whether she will in fact continue to seek...

My shortlist right now: Momentum, Asia ex-China/Japan, or semiconductors, but I am open to suggestions. I need some EU-domiciled ETFs that are traded on EU-regulated exchanges. I'm a bit hesitant on semiconductors. It feels like I missed the boat and we might be at the peak. I'm guessing the recent bump in Asian stocks is mostly just riding that same semicond

US at 250: has Europe learned to survive Trump’s America?

In a public park a stone’s throw from the European Commission buildings in Brussels late last month, beer flowed, meat grilled and country music blared as revellers marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The fallout from the event, however, provided signs – if they were needed – that all is not well in America’s relations with its erstwhile European allies. Just three of the EU’s 27 commissioners and none of its leaders showed up, while authorities were reportedly...

EU should think twice before weaponising its market against China

For much of the post-Cold-War era, the European Union understood economic interdependence as a source of mutual prosperity. Open markets, free trade and multilateral rules were regarded not merely as economic principles but as the foundations of European normative influence. That assumption is rapidly giving way to a different logic. In an era of intensifying geopolitical rivalry, Brussels increasingly views trade, investment and technology as the power instruments of strategic competition. The.
