Don’t dream it’s over: mainland students rethink Hong Kong over costs, culture

Weeks before mainland Chinese student Carol Chen graduated from Baptist University in Hong Kong in July, the 22-year-old did the math and weighed the cost of living in the city against returning home. Renting a room in the city would consume around half of the HK$20,000 (US$2,552) starting salary she expected as a junior data analyst. “If I go back to Shanghai, I will only need to worry about daily expenses,” said Chen, a maths and statistics graduate. Language barriers compounded the problem...

Targeting US$610 billion longevity market, biotech firms race to reverse ageing

For Beijing-based METiS TechBio CEO Lai Tsai-ta, ageing is comparable to bugs building up in a complex software system – it happens once errors begin to accumulate in the genetic code of human cells, such as their DNA sequences. “Those errors can be reprogrammed. It becomes possible to use AI to read, rewrite and reverse cells, or at least slow the ageing process,” Lai said in an interview with the South China Morning Post. The process could begin by fixing “immune cells, such as T cells, as...

How Malaysia’s Langkawi became a paradise for smugglers

Waves break along Cenang Beach as the sun drops over the Andaman Sea, washing Langkawi’s white sand in gold. Tourists sip fresh coconuts beneath rows of bright umbrellas, gazing out at the “Jewel of Kedah”: a duty-free archipelago long sold as one of Malaysia’s premier tropical escapes. Out on the water, meanwhile, small boats traverse the 8km (five miles) of open water that separates Langkawi from Thailand’s Koh Tarutao. On fast boats, the crossing takes a matter of minutes. No navigation...

Putin says no reason to meet Ukraine’s Zelensky, calls his letter ‘rude’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday he currently saw no reason to meet Volodymyr Zelensky after the Ukrainian president published an open letter proposing they hold face-to-face talks to agree an end to a war now in its fifth year. He also suggested that continuing the war.

What actually makes stocks valuable? Is it pure speculation or do they hold intrinsic value?

I’m a young adult looking to start investing in the stock market. I think I have a solid idea of what stocks are and how they are sold, but have had this nagging question since taking my financial literacy class in high school during the whole GME situation. What about shares actually gives them value? Is it just the hope that you can sell it at a higher price? Where does the performance of the company tie into this? My assumptions: - Owning a share of a stock entitles you to a VERY small percen

Can AI Save More Energy Than It Consumes?

The artificial intelligence boom has created unprecedented pressure and anxiety in the energy industry. The public and private sector alike are expending enormous amounts of effort trying to quantify the amount of electricity that will be needed to power data centers in the near future, and get ahead of the skyrocketing energy demands headed for our already outdated and beleaguered electric grids. But the answer to the energy monster that AI is unleashing could very well lie in the application o

Cancel Swiss Life

Hello, a few years ago I unfortunately concluded an ETF retirement contract with Swiss Life through a “financial advisor”. The argument of avoiding/saving taxes in old age convinced me. I now understand that that probably wasn't the best idea. Now there is almost €13,000 there. I pay €280 a month into the ETF. Does it make sense to cancel it and just put everything in the MSCI World and just continue saving there? Or are there other reasons at Swisslife?

Netdecking the stock market

In MTG, Netdecking is where you look up someone else's brilliant composition on the internet and duplicate their deck card-for-card. You benefit from a proven setup, but you still need to know the game and how to play, and even then won't do as well as the inventor of the win-condition. Is there an equivalent of this for the Stock Market? I don't want to spend hours upon hours digging though the nitty gritty (no judgement, just not for me). Can I copy another portfolio (like Berkshire or Elon) a

Energy now a focus of US-China contest of the century

Given that control over energy reinforces superpower status, the contest of the century has morphed into an intense rivalry between China, a rising “electrostate”, and the United States, the world’s hydrocarbon hegemon safeguarding its position. China recognises that electricity drives its economy. Despite being a major producer of coal, crude oil and natural gas, China remains an importer of these hydrocarbons. However, with strategic patience, through its five-year plans, the country has been.
