At World Cup, Mexico leans on China tech and transport to keep the tournament kicking

Although China has no team on the pitch at the 2026 World Cup, the country’s industrial and technological presence is dominating the tournament’s logistics in Mexico. China has bolstered Mexico’s capacity as a host country with railways and buses, as well as the tournament’s official footballs. And that support comes at a time when the Latin American country is navigating its relations with Beijing amid mounting pressure from Washington. Among the bigger-ticket items on a long list of support...

Swiss voters reject right-wing plan to cap population at 10 million

The Swiss appeared to have voted down a divisive anti-immigration proposal to cap the country’s population, early projections showed on Sunday. Shortly after polls closed at noon, initial projections from the GfS.bern institute indicated around 55 per cent opposition to the initiative, which had sparked warnings of “chaos” and devastating impacts for the Swiss economy and European Union relations. “We are very relieved and happy. This is an important result for our country and for our relations.

I didn’t realize Microsoft was spending this much on infrastructure

I opened Microsoft’s latest quarter expecting to find some obvious reason people have turned so negative on the stock. The growth numbers didn’t really surprise me that much. Revenue was still up, operating income was still up, Azure was still growing fast. The number I kept staring at was cash paid for PP&E: $30.9B in one quarter. I still think of Microsoft as Office, Azure, enterprise software, high margins, all that. But that capex number is way heavier than the version of Microsoft I had in

Bollywood drops Beijing as a villain – is a Russia-China-India axis next?

Not long ago, China was the villain of choice in much of India’s public discourse. The 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, in which both sides lost soldiers in hand-to-hand combat over their disputed Himalayan border, changed Indian public sentiment almost overnight. From WeChat to TikTok, Chinese apps disappeared from Indian app stores. Investment rules tightened. Television debates grew more jingoistic after arch-rival Pakistan used Chinese-supplied jets and missiles in a three-day conflict with India

How is Bitcoin not just a digital amulet

You know how amulet sellers spoke the language of fixes: this carved bone wards off evil spirits, that little stone guarantees a good harvest, this piece of metal cures sickness, that scrap of cloth brings luck. The objects themselves were ordinary junk with zero real power. They fixed nothing. Their only strength was the story and the desperate hope of the buyer. Bitcoin works exactly the same way, just in digital form. Promoters talk endlessly about the fixes it delivers. It will end inflation

Gold ETCs. What is the difference?

Looking to buy gold as a small % of my portfolio. Do not hold any now, and did not buy any during the previous year's gold rush. So buying for diversification - not speculation. Looking at gold ETCs, and I see that 4GLD has a TER of 0.00%, but people say that it is misleading. The performance of all of them seems very similar. JustETF comparison page is also not very helpful https://www.justetf.com/en/how-to/gold-etfs.html What should I be looking for? submitted by /u/monitorius1 [link] [comment

A landlord and a tenant have been arrested after a rental dispute turned violent inside a subdivided flat in Hong Kong.
