Will Andy Burnham shake up the UK’s China policy if he becomes prime minister?

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s likely replacement could continue the outgoing leader’s pragmatic approach towards China, though addressing economic challenges at home would remain the most immediate priority, observers say. Clearing the way for the selection of the UK’s seventh prime minister in a decade, Starmer announced on Monday his intention to step down, succumbing to mounting pressure within his Labour Party as his popularity dwindled. Shortly after Starmer’s resignation, Andy...

China’s Antimony Ban Sent Prices Up 2,600%. Rare Earths Are Next

In 2024, China announced export controls on antimony. It’s a metal most people have never heard of, but antimony goes into more than 200 types of military munitions. Within weeks, the price went from $1,400 per ton to $38,000 — a 2,600% spike — and shipments to the United States fell 97%. Today, Beijing is setting up for something bigger. And REalloys (NASDAQ: ALOY) — a U.S.-based mine-to-magnet rare earth company — has spent years getting ready for it. The company holds an exclusive 80% offtake

If mini-jobs are no longer available, will I have cheap health insurance with a €100/month job in the future?

Since our government now wants to abolish the mini-job, I wonder whether you could benefit from extremely low social security contributions or health insurance costs if you earn, for example, €100/month? For Barista FIRE, or people with their own home and a low standard of living, that would actually be a great thing… right? submitted by /u/DontKnowItEither [link] [comments]

What actually causes swings in stock prices?

A stock price is determined by supply/demand. Most people get that. So when the S&P500 is down 1.5% and the NASDAQ is down 3% in one day, I'm assuming that means there is a ginormous buttload of selling. Also in a hypothetical situation where nobody ever sold a share of a stock ever, the stock market would never go down. So who is actually doing most of this selling that results in this price drop? Is it hedge fund managers? Retail investors? I assumed most institutional investors that manage re

Looking for ETF advice: best option for long-term investing?

I'm 21 and I've decided I want to start investing instead of letting my money sit in my bank account. I have around €1,000 that I can invest right now, and after that I plan to invest €100–200 every month consistently. I'm not interested in trading, day trading, or trying to pick individual stocks. What I'm looking for is something simple, ideally an ETF or index fund that I can buy, keep adding to every month, and hold for the next 10–20+ years without having to think about it much. If you were

Tankers Emerge from Dark Mode amid Tentative Hormuz ReopeningTankers Emerge from

A growing number of oil tankers have been broadcasting their position and intention to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in recent hours, in a sign that a tentative recovery of traffic through the chokepoint is underway. Before the U.S. and Iran signed the memorandum of understanding to negotiate a peace deal, most tankers were moving through and around the Strait of Hormuz in the so-called dark mode, with transponders and AIS positioning switched off. Once the hallmark of Iran’s sanction-evadin

Trump says Iran agreed to nuclear inspections into 'infinity', Tehran denies US claims

This article shows just how Iran is profiting economically and geopolitically from these negotiations from the fist few days: "The United States waived sanctions on Iran for 60 days" - Real income in the billions for Iran. "Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said...[Iran] had no plans for the U.N. nuclear watchdog to inspect Iran's damaged nuclear facilities" - Iran continues not to give anything on the nuclear issue, far behind JCPOA so far. "They agreed on a mechanism to end fighting
