Courts and Congress Are Undoing Trump's War on Wind Power

There has been significant back-and-forth on offshore wind power in the United States. As part of ambitious plans for a green transition, the former Biden administration strongly supported offshore wind with both policy and federal funding. However, the Trump administration has since backtracked on U.S. wind energy goals, with President Trump openly opposing offshore wind. However, with greater political pushback from Congress and federal judges, it appears that progress on wind energy is hard t

Beijing sends new coastguard force into waters east of Taiwan

Beijing on Saturday rotated a new coastguard task force into waters east of Taiwan. The second such deployment in about a month came days after China’s top diplomat urged Washington to exercise “utmost prudence” on the self-governed island. The move also comes close on the heels of high-level talks with the Philippines, where Beijing pressed Manila to match words with deeds and stabilise bilateral relations amid persistent South China Sea tensions. The Chinese coastguard said on Saturday that...

Money Market Funds - cannot understand if I like them

I have around one year of expenses in a Tagesgeld with N26 but as they did not move the interest rate even with the latest ECB increase I am considering moving some or all of it. Easiest logistical piece would be the Flexible Cash Fund they offer up to 2.29% however the more I read around MMF the less I trust them. How is the sub around MMFs? Do you use them? Should I just open yet another bank account to still use Tagesgeld but with better conditions? (I have a DKB, N26, Degiro and Scalable but

Currency advantages, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city’s palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar...

The end of ‘just in time’? Asia rejigs supply chains post-Hormuz

How many crises does it take to change the way the world trades? For Asia, the answer appears to be three. First Covid closed the factories that fed the logistics networks, then Russia’s invasion of Ukraine choked off Black Sea grain exports and sent energy prices spiralling. Now, the US-Israel war on Iran may have hammered the final nail in the coffin of “just in time” supply chains that some economists say are no longer fit for purpose. “Taken together, they show that serious disruption is now

Trump warns American identity under ‘renewed attack’ as US turns 250

US President Donald Trump lashed out on Friday at what he called a fresh threat against the country’s identity, taking aim at domestic “radicals and extremists” on the eve of America’s 250th birthday. In a speech dripping with patriotism, Trump lauded American exceptionalism and praised its past leaders, speaking at Mount Rushmore with its giant carved heads of four of his legendary predecessors. But he added at the foot of the iconic monument: “As we approach this magnificent anniversary, we...

Copper's Next Move Depends On Washington, Not The Strait Of Hormuz

Six months after Operation Epic Fury upended the metals complex, the Strait of Hormuz still can't decide if it's open. Days after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, Iran's military declared the strait closed again, only for Iran's own foreign ministry to tell state media shipping was “operating normally.” Under that same agreement, Washington has until July 19 to fully lift its naval blockade, while Tehran is only committed to its “best efforts” to restore pre-war

DOJ Urges States to Enforce Fuel Price-Gouging Laws

The Trump administration is taking its campaign against high gasoline prices to the states, and it’s doing it formally. A little more than a week after President Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department to investigate possible price gouging at the pump, federal antitrust regulators have formally asked state attorneys general to join the effort, warning that oil market volatility is no excuse for anticompetitive behavior. In a letter sent Friday seen by CBS News, the Justice Department and the

Merz hits back at Trump for ridiculing Germany’s defence spending drive

Germany does not have to shy away from talking up its record on defence spending, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday, when asked about US President Donald Trump calling Germany’s past efforts “ridiculous”. The issue of defence spending has loomed large as Nato leaders prepare to gather ‌next week in Ankara, where Europeans aim to set aside strife with Trump over Iran and Greenland and show they are stepping up to defend the continent. “Germany is doubling its defence budget within four..

China-EU trade, Xi touts ‘global influence’, Nato summit

China told the European Union that it is willing to increase purchases of EU goods to help pare a massive trade gap, potentially easing the risk of a trade war. Commerce Minister Wang Wentao suggested that China is open to purchase agreements covering European goods in trade talks this week with EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic, the South China Morning Post reported, citing unidentified people briefed on the discussions. Lower tariffs on EU imports were also discussed (see trade talks joint...

Johor-Singapore SEZ blueprint delay sparks tension ahead of Malaysia state election

Johor’s caretaker chief minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi has criticised Malaysia’s federal government for delays in the launch of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) master plan, arguing that it is needed to sustain the initiative’s momentum. In response, Economic Minister Akmal Nasir, who oversees the project at the federal level, has maintained that the government remains committed to the project’s success and the delays have not affected the JS-SEZ as investor numbers have remained...

Hong Kong students tour PLA Navy warships for lesson on national defence

Groups of Hong Kong students on Friday had a lesson aboard two PLA Navy warships moored at Stonecutters Island’s Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks on Friday. Pui Kiu College student Jas Xu said stepping into the ship cabins and observing the interior weapon...

Where to put the money?

Hello everyone, my wife and I (both 30) + child have a total monthly income of a good €7k. We currently set aside around €3k per month. We have too little equity to build/buy a house and therefore too little income. In 3 years you might build up €100k in equity, but the interest could be somewhere else and the construction and land costs will definitely not be any lower. So context: life between Munich, Ingolstadt and Augsburg. Child goes to school there and the costs are typical for southern Bavaria
