US adds Alibaba, BYD and other Chinese tech champions to military company blacklist

The Pentagon has designated Alibaba, BYD, Baidu and more than a dozen other prominent Chinese companies as “Chinese military companies” operating in the United States, widening a blacklist that has become an increasingly effective tool in Washington’s campaign to restrict China’s access to American capital, technology and government contracts. In a Federal Register notice scheduled for publication on Wednesday, the US Defence Department said the Under Secretary of Defence for Acquisition and...

China's LNG Imports Hit Highest Point Since Iran War Began

China's state-controlled energy giants are buying and importing the highest volumes of liquefied natural gas since the war in Iran began as the world's top LNG importer prepares for peak summer demand and heat waves. Private buyers are also stepping up purchases and China looks to replace the loss of Qatari gas. Chinese LNG importers are now taking between 7 and 10 cargoes per month to replace Qatar's deliveries, traders told Bloomberg on Monday. Part of Qatar's LNG that was loaded on cargoes be

Starting investing late - how would you accelerate?

I'm 49M. Most of my adult life the money went elsewhere - obligations, studying, the house - so I'm starting the serious investing part late and I know it. State pension only starts at 67 and it'll be small like 1k + inflation. I want to stop working at 60, roughly 11 years to build, then a 7-year gap to bridge before any state pension. Where I am: newly built energy efficient house (I pay like 50eur for heating in the coldest months for heating) without a mortgage + I have an apartment in the c

Brent Climbs to $94 as Houthis Target Israeli Vessels in Red Sea

The Middle East's largest remaining oil export corridor came under renewed pressure on Monday after Yemen's Houthis announced a complete ban on Israeli shipping in the Red Sea, risking a further widening of the shipping crisis beyond the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement comes as the Red Sea has assumed a far larger role in global oil trade following months of disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia has increasingly relied on its East-West Pipeline system and the Red Sea export ter

Mindanao quake exposes Philippines’ vulnerability to ‘Big One’ tremor in Metro Manila

A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Mindanao on Monday morning served as a stark reminder of the Philippines’ vulnerability to a major quake in Metro Manila, disaster experts said. The tremor, which triggered tsunami warnings along the southern coast, left collapsed buildings, damaged homes and debris-strewn streets in its wake. At least 19 people were killed and more than 130 injured, with scores still missing, local disaster authorities said. For disaster planners, the...

Is there actually an easy way to sell a “target amount after tax”?

Question is in the title. Let's say, hypothetically, I have a large ETF portfolio and currently need €50k of it. Every share sold is taxed, depending on the price at which I bought it. If I need an exact amount, I have to use an Excel spreadsheet that has all purchases and purchase prices in order to calculate the potential profit and tax for X shares. I can hardly be the first to need this and don't want to believe that this isn't a solved problem

Japanese city closes 94 schools as hunt for stray bear enters third day

A bear roaming the streets of a Japanese city for three days forced the closure of nearly 100 schools on Monday, as dozens of hunters and officials searched for the animal. The city government of Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, closed all 94 public primary and junior high schools in the area after receiving more than 10 reports of bear sightings since Saturday – including in a shopping arcade. “We have vehicles out to areas where a bear was seen to make people aware and to urge people to stay...

China sees record panda bond issuance in 2026 as foreign borrowers pile in

Foreign governments, international banks and multinational companies are increasingly tapping China’s domestic bond market, as panda bond issuance hit a record high in the first five months of the year. A total of 11 entities sold 14 panda bonds – yuan-denominated debt instruments issued by foreign entities in mainland China’s onshore market – worth 26.64 billion yuan (US$3.7 billion) in May, up 246 per cent from a year earlier and the highest level on record for the month, according to data...

I Am Not a Perma Bear, But I Cannot Buy This Market

I am not a perma bear. I believe in equities, innovation, and long-term wealth creation. Markets rise more often than they fall, and betting against human progress is usually a mistake. But sometimes risk becomes too obvious to ignore. For me, that happened in March 2026. I sold all my stocks because I believed the market had moved from expensive to irrational. Since then, the market has gone parabolic, and missing that rally has been painful. Even so, I cannot buy back in. The first problem is

1 killed, ‘many buildings’ damaged after magnitude 7.8 quake strikes Philippines

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, killing at least one person, collapsing buildings and sparking tsunami warnings across the region. Authorities in the Philippines and Indonesia urged residents in affected coastal regions to move to higher ground immediately, after the offshore quake hit at a depth of 35km (22 miles) about 24km west of Mindanao’s Sarangani province, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. It struck at 7.37am. Aftershocks up to 6.1 magnitude...

Just throw around €10,000 into an ETF?

I only started investing last month and have created small savings plans every month. However, my parents once put around €6,000 into a savings account for me (with a phenomenal 0.1% interest at the moment!). Logically, I would now like to liquidate that. And another €6,000 in a normal checking account, saved through money for birthdays and Christmas, etc. I also saved around €6,000 myself. I would use a good portion as an emergency fund

This week: May CPI inflation will break above 4% and ECB will hike on Thurday

For those wondering if markets have more room to fall.. On Wednesday US CPI data for the month of May will be released and having looked at the latest estimates from major firms, it's almost certain headline CPI will break above 4% again for the first time since April 2023. Estimates are 4.1 to 4.2% which will bring Fed hikes back into focus. Core CPI is also expected to edge up to a seven-month high of 2.9%, which is more concerning since this strips out oil from the headline data. For the mont

Police arrest man after Tesla rams parked vehicle in latest drug-driving case

Hong Kong police have arrested a driver who crashed his car into a parked vehicle in Tai Kok Tsui and tested positive for ketamine, marking at least the fourth suspected drug-driving case in less than a week. The accident occurred at around noon on Sunday on Hoi Fai Road outside the Olympian City 3 shopping centre where the 30-year-old’s Tesla car struck the rear of a stationary vehicle before veering onto the pavement. The male driver of the parked car, also a Tesla, suffered neck injuries and.

Question about capital gains tax

I understand that gains on capital gains up to €1000 are tax-free and after that I have to pay 25% tax. Let's say I have already achieved exactly €1000 in profit this year (e.g. through interest, dividends, sales) and have already realized it. Now I still have two blocks of shares. With one I'm up €1000 since I bought it and with the second I'm down €1000 since I bought it. If I only sold the Plus package I would only make a profit of €750. Now the question: If I he
