Why the Trump-Xi relationship may be the weakest link in US-China ties

As the summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump fades in the rear-view mirror, marked by anaemic deliverables, poor transparency and missed opportunities, analysts and former US officials point to another disappointment: the world’s most consequential relationship has become inordinately dependent on the two nations’ top leaders. Trump’s May China trip, the first by a US president in nearly a decade, produced vague and contradictory readouts, puffed up promises,.

Brent Erases Iran War Premium as Hormuz Flows Show Signs of Recovery

Oil prices tumbled as markets bet Strait of Hormuz disruptions will ease, with Brent down 10% on the week and Middle East crude benchmarks slipping into contango. Friday, June 26, 2026 Whilst ship transits through the Strait of Hormuz remain a fraction of their previous norm (130-140 transits per day), plunging crude oil prices suggest the commodity markets anticipate that flows would start to recover sooner than later. The two Middle Eastern crude benchmarks, Dubai and Murban, have flipped into

‘We love guns’: school shooting exposes reality of Philippine crisis

Monday’s school shooting in the Philippines that killed three students and injured dozens has highlighted the decades-long problem of gun proliferation in the country, easy access to weapons despite theoretically strict laws – and Filipinos’ fascination with firearms. One shocking issue that emerged after videos of the shooting were posted online was the quantity of bullets fired and the teenaged shooters’ seeming familiarity with weapons. Officers recovered 21 fired cartridge cases, seven lead.

Hormuz Shipping Confidence Is Still Shaky

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has picked up over the past week but shipowners remain cautious about transiting, especially after the Thursday attack in the Gulf of Oman on a vessel that had just cleared the chokepoint. On Friday morning local time, two tankers carrying crude were moving out of the Strait while four empty supertankers were traveling inbound near the Omani coast, according to vessel-tracking data monitored by Bloomberg. While some traffic has been observed on Friday, the Th

US and allies flex military muscle on China’s doorstep with multi-front drills

When Japan quietly deployed members of its elite airborne brigade for parachute drills in the Philippines’ northernmost province earlier this month, the exercise was not vigorously publicised by officials on either side. The drills on Batan Island, in the Batanes province, formed part of Kamandag – a countrywide mission jointly hosted by Philippine and US marines that ran until Wednesday. Involving some 2,000 troops, the exercise was designed to improve readiness, interoperability and...

Why Chinese exporters and shipping firms remain wary despite the US-Iran peace deal

Iran and the United States may have entered a temporary ceasefire, but uncertainty over the agreement continues to cast a shadow over the operations of Chinese businesses across the Gulf region. While the deal has raised hopes that business activity could gradually resume, many traders and investors remain reluctant to make long-term commitments. For Abbas Shi, a Chinese businessman who has been helping connect Chinese companies with Iranian partners since 2024, the immediate priority is...

Lithium carbonate futures in China fell ~10% over two trading sessions, dropping to a 10-week low of approximately 157,000 yuan ($23,175) per tonne on Tuesday following market speculation that China’s EV battery giant, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ migrant detention centre has closed, Florida governor DeSantis says

“Alligator Alcatraz”, the remote Florida immigration detention centre that faced harsh criticism for its conditions, has shut down nearly a year after opening, Governor Ron DeSantis said on Thursday. DeSantis said the centre at an isolated airstrip in the Everglades was always meant to be only temporary until more permanent detention facilities could be secured, and federal officials now have that capacity. “It served its purpose for the time,” the Republican governor said at a news...

Core PCE inflation rises to 3.4% making Fed hikes soon very likely

Core PCE inflation just got released and went up from 3.3% to 3.4% so certainly not going back to the Fed's target of 2%. Headline PCE inflation even hit 4.1%. Consumer spending also came in stronger than expected rising 0.7% for the month of May. Different firms like Citadel already expected hiking to start in September but even a hike at the July meeting is now possible combined with shrinking the Fed's balance which could push up bond yields. submitted by /u/ThinkBigger01 [link] [comments]

Standard broker watchlists are boring and designed to make retail lose money. (A former Big 5 Strategist's perspective).

Hey everyone. I spent a few years on the institutional side working as a Big 5 banking strategist, and honestly, watching retail get chopped up during these high volatility weeks is brutal. The biggest issue I saw from the inside is that retail tools are basically just noise generators. Your standard brokerage watchlist is just a static list of red and green numbers. It tracks price, sure, but it completely fails to track conviction. When things get volatile, people panic, follow trailing moment
