People’s Daily joins Beijing blitz against Philippines over 2016 South China Sea ruling

China’s flagship Communist Party newspaper has joined a sweeping rhetorical offensive against rival maritime claimant the Philippines, days ahead of the 10th anniversary of a South China Sea arbitration ruling rejected by Beijing as “illegal”. In twin commentaries published on Friday, the People’s Daily branded the July 12 decision of 2016 a “destabilising force” and demanded that Manila pivot to direct talks. The commentaries from official media cap a multi-agency initiative from Beijing in...

Childfree civil servants in Germany

My partner (30F) and I (30M) are both Beamte (German civil servants with lifetime tenure). No kids by strong conviction, no mortgage, no debt. Our financial base is structurally different from most FIRE paths I see discussed here, and I'm curious whether others in Europe have a similar setup, or whether we're genuinely an edge case. We're essentially unfireable with a guaranteed government pension indexed to inflation. That pension isn't amazing, but it's a floor that eliminates the biggest FIRE

Johor election: where winning isn’t enough for Malaysia’s Barisan Nasional

Voters in Malaysia’s southern state of Johor will cast their ballots on Saturday in a high-stakes election that is expected to bring Barisan Nasional (BN) back to power, exposing deeper cracks in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration. BN is part of Anwar’s unity government but will go head to head against federal partner Pakatan Harapan (PH) in a state long regarded as a BN stronghold. The contest for Johor’s 56-seat assembly has put Anwar’s multi-ethnic party in an awkward position, but

More LNG Carriers Brave the Strait of Hormuz Despite Renewed Hostilities

Close to half a dozen liquefied natural gas carriers have gone into the Strait of Hormuz in the past few days and six have exited the strait, despite the recent return to hostilities between the United States and Iran. According to Kpler data cited by Reuters, five ballast LNG tankers have entered the chokepoint in recent days, four of them linked to Qatar, and the fifth one owned by a Greek shipping company. The five vessels were previously seen outside Hormuz earlier this month. An earlier rep

Super Typhoon Bavi nears Japan’s Okinawa, flights axed and noodle shelves emptied

A large and powerful typhoon approached a remote chain of islands in Japan’s southwest on Friday, prompting authorities to warn of violent winds, torrential rain, landslides and flooding in what could be the region’s most destructive storm in years. Super Typhoon Bavi is expected to pass very close to Japan’s Sakishima Islands, a remote island chain that is part of Okinawa prefecture, early on ‌Saturday morning, according to meteorological authorities. Maximum sustained winds were topping out at

Why the Philippines is losing out in Southeast Asia’s investment boom

The Philippines still lags behind its neighbours in attracting foreign direct investments (FDI) after its inflows remained stagnant in 2025, even as a financing influx swept the region. This has cast the spotlight on a corruption scandal that has roiled the country and dented investor confidence to some extent, on top of long-standing systemic issues, analysts say. Manila ranked sixth in Southeast Asia after capturing just US$9 billion of the US$244 billion capital boom last year, according to..

Can this bull market last forever?

Since 2023 the s&p has went up 84 percent which is insane for 3 years time. The united states cant afford another recession due to the debt the government owes so the fed will always cut rates to save the day which will cause inflation and inflation makes stocks inflate also. We are in a completely different era with how easy it is to invest on our smartphones and in the absence of pensions, 401ks are being automatically invested in with peoples paychecks so it props up the market. I feel like t

Investing Student Loans??

My girlfriend and I have been together for two years, and she’s currently in a doctoral program. I pay for all the bills and she lives with me for free while she’s in school. If she takes out student loans (the interest rate for a federal loan, which we were looking into is 8.07%) to cover her “living expenses” and gives me money for her “share” of the rent, groceries, gas, and other bills, would it be worth it for me to invest that money on her behalf in an ETF like VT or VOO until it’s needed?

Philippines looks to space for bird’s-eye view of South China Sea threats

The Philippines is preparing to create a military space centre by 2028, a move that could help Manila strengthen surveillance, communications and command across its archipelago and in contested areas of the South China Sea. But analysts said the ambition would be constrained by the technical, financial and manpower hurdles of turning space assets into military capability. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jnr said on Tuesday the initiative – which would enhance...

Asia’s top climate scientist warns of ‘humanitarian disasters’ as Earth teeters

As Super Typhoon Bavi churns towards Taiwan and eastern mainland China, they offer a chilling timely reminder that the world needs to brace for impending disasters as the climate system nears a tipping point. For Benjamin Horton, the newly minted recipient of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society Axford Medal – the most prestigious honour in Asian climate and earth science – the world has entered a period of volatility in which historical weather patterns are no longer a reliable guide to future.

The Strait Of Malacca Faces Growing Fears Of Copycat Shipping Fees

Oil prices spiked again on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire deal with Iran is over and vowed to strike Iran again, effectively ending the tentative peace deal barely a month after signing. Iran struck three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday that were using an alternative route near Oman's coast rather than the northern corridor controlled by Tehran, prompting retaliatory attacks by the United States. Iran has threatened to completely clo

Fed Sees Oil Prices Cooling Despite Renewed Iran War

The Federal Reserve still thinks energy prices are headed lower even as missiles are flying again in the Middle East. New York Fed President John Williams said Thursday that the market's expectation for oil prices to ease over the next six to 12 months remains "a pretty reasonable baseline," despite the collapse of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire framework and renewed attacks threatening energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. That optimism may prove difficult to maintain. Oil markets have spent the
