Germany hews EU’s tough China line with call for ‘Plaza Accord’ talks on yuan

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signalled a major shift in Berlin’s economic relations with Beijing on Friday, saying the Chinese currency was undervalued by 30 per cent, well above the International Monetary Fund’s estimate of “about 16 per cent”. Speaking in Brussels after a European Council summit, Merz said China was “flooding markets” through the use of “high subsidies”, adding that “subsidising overcapacities” along with a “currency that isn’t convertible freely … is not...

China’s private-jet market finding level flight path after sell-offs: source

An exodus of private business jets from China since the days of Covid-19 appears to be stabilising this year amid a potential shift in demand across industries, suggesting that sales by cash-strapped owners of the multimillion-dollar assets have largely run their course, according to an aviation-services firm. While a few deliveries of new business jets in China are currently “pending”, very few were made last year, said Alud Davies, director of business operations and analytics at Hong...

36M, considering FIRE. How would you structure it?

36M, Italian, currently living in Switzerland. Not burned out, but increasingly tired of corporate life (politics, restructurings, general grind), even though my job is objectively relaxed and remote. Thinking of potentially FIRE’ing within 1–2 years. Current situation: - €2M portfolio - 90% VT / 10% Bitcoin - €250k cash (recent property sale) - No capital gains tax in current residence Lifestyle plan: I’d likely move between Latin America and Southeast Asia (Thailand in particular). Chinese man marries woman 3 days after blind date video call, regrets 9 days later

A Chinese man whose dating of a woman consisted of a five-minute video call before marrying her within three days regretted what he had done just nine days later. The 32-year-old man, surnamed Gu, who is from the eastern province of Zhejiang and is a single child, blamed parental pressure for his rash decision. He spent 200 yuan (US$30) to register with a local matchmaking centre, which introduced him to three local women. They were not interested in him. The matchmaker suggested women from...

G7 rare earths, US-Iran peace deal, Summer Davos

The Group of Seven nations this week agreed to pare their reliance on China for vital raw materials, while European leaders struggled to reach a consensus on how to respond to a flood of low-cost Chinese imports. No single country should supply more than 60 per cent of the G7 nations’ rare earths and permanent magnets by 2030, their leaders agreed during a summit in Evian, France. The nations will subsequently aim for a 50 per cent limit as quickly as possible. Targets for other critical...

ETF/General Investment vs. Savings Bank Retirement Provision

I recently had a conversation at the Sparkasse because they wanted to talk to me about retirement planning. I don't really plan on using the savings bank to invest, as they are known to want pretty wild percentages. I went anyway, and I immediately rejected the topics like actively managed funds for “only” 3.5% fees. Building savings contract doesn't really make sense either, so the only thing that remained was the topic of retirement provision. The "advisor" was at least transparent enough to say that the whole thing
