Measures against the transnational repression of human rights defenders
The EU Parliament has approved an own-initiative report that aims to facilitate, expand and strengthen the protection of human rights defenders affected by transnational repression by third countries. What is required, among other things, is a common EU approach with clear legal bases in the member states, training for authorities, better data collection, simplified visa and residence procedures and stronger coordination at EU level. In addition, stricter regulations should be enacted for, for example, the spying software industry and social media platforms, which enable cross-border suppression. The export of spying software to authoritarian regimes should be prevented in the future. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. The measures were adopted overall with 512 votes in favour, 76 against and 52 abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 65 voted for and 17 against. There was one abstention from Friedrich Pürner.
