S&P 500 or all around the world or both!?

Hi, I'm new to this. I was just wondering what's better Vanguard all around the world or S&P 500 I'm pretty sure they are similar. I could be wrong but isn't S&P 500 just the top 500 companies in America? So does that mean I'm relying on America to do well as with all around the world it's a safer option but less return?
