Essential content

The EU Parliament has adopted a regulation of the EU Commission that provides for the increase of tariffs on imports of certain agricultural products and fertilizers from Russia and Belarus, including agricultural products that were previously exempt from additional tariffs (e.g. sugar, vinegar, flour and animal feed). The aim is to reduce the EU's dependence on imports from these countries in order to protect food safety and the EU economy. While tariffs on agricultural products are to rise sharply immediately, tariffs on fertilizers are to be increased gradually over three years. In addition, products from Russia and Belarus are to be excluded from access to certain tariff quotas in the future. These measures are intended to prevent Russia and Belarus from benefiting economically from EU imports, especially given the political tensions resulting from Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
