Introduction of the euro in Bulgaria
The EU Parliament has voted by a large majority in favor of introducing the euro in Bulgaria and joining the eurozone from January 1, 2026. The Bulgarian currency Lev is to be replaced by the Euro on this date. The country has made great progress in economic development in recent years and now meets the necessary criteria for the introduction of the common European currency. In addition, this is an important political and economic signal about the stability and attractiveness of the euro. This will make Bulgaria the 21st country of the 27 EU member states in the euro area. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. A report was adopted with 531 votes in favour, 69 against and 79 abstentions, which confirms that Bulgaria meets the criteria for introducing the euro. Of the German MEPs, 63 voted for and 23 against. There were four abstentions.
