Essential content

On Thursday, the European Parliament voted on a motion of no confidence against the European Commission under President Ursula von der Leyen. The motion of no confidence was initiated by the extreme right-wing PfE faction. A variety of allegations are made in the application. The EU Commission's green policy has led to a decline in economic growth and competitiveness in Europe and the livelihoods of citizens and companies have been weakened. There is also a lack of effective methods to curb illegal migration and the signatories see freedom of expression in the EU as restricted. Particular emphasis is placed on the criticism of the signing of the Mercosur agreement despite the resistance of several member states. The agreement would expose European agricultural businesses to unfair competition and threaten their existence. The trade agreement with the USA after President Donald Trump's tariff threats is also criticized. There is a high hurdle for the adoption of a motion of no confidence: it requires the approval of at least two thirds of the votes cast and the majority of the members of Parliament. If the application were accepted, the commission would have to resign as a unit. Another motion of no confidence, initiated by the left-wing faction, was also rejected. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. The motion of censure was rejected overall with 378 votes against, 179 in favor and 37 abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 60 voted against and 25 for. There were no abstentions. Non-attached MPs such as Sibylle Berg, Martin Sonneborn, Fabio de Masi and other members of the BSW also agreed to the motion.
