The EU Parliament has spoken out in favor of a new version of the regulation on the statute and financing of European political parties and foundations. The new regulation is based on a proposal from the EU Commission from 2021. The aim of the reform is to strengthen transparency and financial stability within the European party landscape and to improve protection against foreign influence. The revised regulation, which Parliament and the Council agreed on after several rounds of negotiations in June 2025, provides, among other things, for stricter rules on financial supervision, a limit on self-generated income and the harmonization of co-financing rates. This means that parties have to contribute less of their own money to receive EU funding. In addition, European parties and foundations should receive more visibility in the future and ensure a more balanced gender ratio. In addition, new protective measures against influence from abroad and restrictions on membership fees from third countries are to be introduced. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. The regulation was adopted overall with 446 votes in favour, 162 against and 35 abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 69 voted for and 19 against. There was one abstention from Friedrich Pürner (non-attached).
