Fighting left-wing extremism in Thuringia
The state parliament has dealt with a proposal from the AfD parliamentary group to combat left-wing extremism in Thuringia. In it, the group says that left-wing extremist violence and structures have increased in the country and that state measures have not yet been sufficiently effective. Criticism includes, among other things, a comparatively low clearance rate for such crimes, deficiencies in law enforcement and the way government authorities deal with certain organizations. At the same time, attention is drawn to increasing numbers of attacks on officials and elected officials as well as on political institutions. The state government is therefore called upon to take measures to combat left-wing extremist violence more strongly. These include, among other things, better equipment for security authorities, more consistent enforcement of existing laws, more intensive monitoring of relevant structures and a review of state funding. In addition, cooperation with other authorities should be expanded and regular reports on developments in the scene should be reported. The motion was rejected with 51 votes against. 31 MPs voted in favor, with one abstention from Martina Schweinsburg (CDU parliamentary group).
