Essential content

Effective gender equality in Europe was debated in the EU Parliament. Concrete measures that provide for an ambitious equality strategy after 2025 with concrete legal initiatives were adopted in the plenary session. Among other things, it is called for the Commission to take more decisive action against gender-based violence, for example by recognizing violence against women as a criminal offense under EU law, combating femicide and a consent-based definition of rape in EU law. MEPs are also calling for greater commitment to gender-sensitive healthcare as well as equality and empowerment for women in the workplace, including equal pay, opportunities, balanced representation and equal political participation. The EU's foreign, defense and security policy should also pursue a feminist approach, with respect for women's rights and gender equality among the main objectives.
