Cancellation of the “future decision”
The Hamburg parliament voted on a motion from the CDU parliamentary group that is directed against the so-called “future decision” on climate protection. The background is a referendum from 2025 that envisages Hamburg becoming climate neutral more quickly by 2040 (instead of the current 2045). The CDU parliamentary group assesses this goal as technically difficult to implement, economically burdensome and socially unbalanced. Among other things, it relies on a report according to which bringing forward climate neutrality could cause significant additional costs and burdens for households, companies and the state. Possible effects on jobs and the competitiveness of the Hamburg economy are also critically highlighted. The application therefore calls for the climate protection law passed in the referendum to be repealed and for a return to the previous legal situation. Instead, climate protection should continue to be pursued, but should be more closely aligned with economic, social and technological realities. The motion was rejected with 85 votes against. 25 MPs voted in favor, there were no abstentions.
