Terminate state broadcasting contracts

AntragrejectedSubmitted: December 17, 2025Vote: December 17, 2025
Essential content

The state parliament has dealt with a motion on the future of public broadcasting. In it, the AfD parliamentary group calls on the state government to declare the termination of all central state broadcasting agreements by December 31, 2025, including the state media agreement, the state broadcasting fee agreement, the state broadcasting financing agreement and the state agreements of ARD, ZDF, Deutschlandradio and MDR. At the same time, the state government should begin negotiations with the other states about a fundamental redesign of public broadcasting. Strictly balanced reporting, the exclusion of content requirements that could restrict journalistic freedom, ensuring that supervisory bodies are independent of the state, abolishing funding through compulsory contributions and aligning the salary structure with the public service are also required. The justification for the application states that the existing broadcasting treaties are no longer up to date. Public broadcasting is not in a position to implement necessary reforms independently, which is why a fundamental reorganization is necessary. The motion was rejected with 66 votes against. 16 MPs voted in favor and there were no abstentions.
