Essential content

In particular, the EU Parliament has adopted a motion for a resolution on the European Citizens' Initiative “My Voice, My Choice”, which calls for better access to safe and legal abortions in the EU. In the resolution, Parliament notes that women continue to face legal and practical barriers to accessing abortion in several EU Member States. The MPs are therefore calling on these states to adapt their laws and political regulations to international human rights standards. The core demand is the establishment of a voluntary financial solidarity mechanism, which should be supported by the EU. This is intended to enable Member States to help people without access to safe and legal abortion in their country of origin in accordance with the national legislation of another Member State. At the same time, Parliament emphasizes the importance of access to contraceptives, information on family planning, abortion and maternal health care. The European Commission now has to explain by March 2026 whether and what measures it wants to take in response to the initiative. The citizens' initiative “My Voice, My Choice” had collected over 1.12 million signatures from at least seven EU member states and thus met the formal requirements for treatment at EU level.
