Essential content

In the Thuringian state parliament, an amendment from the AfD parliamentary group to the budget law 2026/2027 was rejected. Specifically, the amendment proposed reducing or eliminating funding for various projects and programs. This affected, among other things, grants for prevention and advisory work, funding for independent providers and funds for projects in the area of youth welfare. Particularly extensive cuts should affect the “Thuringian state program for democracy, tolerance and cosmopolitanism”, the funding for which should largely be eliminated. In addition, the AfD parliamentary group wanted to introduce additional conditions for funding. Organizations should no longer receive financial resources if, in the opinion of the applicant, they do not work in an ideologically neutral manner. In its justification, the group states that, in its view, some of the funded organizations acted in a politically one-sided manner or did not operate on a non-profit basis. It is also argued that certain programs, for example to combat hate speech or to promote democracy, are not necessary or are already financed elsewhere. The amendment was rejected by a majority of 31 votes in favor to 47 against, with five abstentions from Sven Küntzel and Anke Wirsing (both BSW parliamentary group) as well as Martin Henkel, Martina Schweinsburg and Henry Worm (all CDU parliamentary group).
