Essential content

The EU Parliament has voted again on a motion of no confidence against the European Commission - the current motion is the fourth against Ursula von der Leyen and her team in around six months. The vote of no confidence was initiated by the extreme right-wing “Patriots for Europe” (PfE) faction, which includes members of the French party Rassemblement National led by Marine Le Pen and the party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The application was justified in particular by criticism of the role of the Commission President in concluding the free trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur states. In order for a motion of no confidence to be debated and made for a decision in the EU Parliament, at least a tenth of the MPs must support it. There is also a high hurdle for adoption: it requires the approval of at least two thirds of the votes cast as well as the majority of the members of Parliament. If the application were accepted, the commission would have to resign as a unit. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. The motion of censure was rejected overall with 390 votes against, 165 votes in favor, and ten abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 57 voted against and 22 for. There were no abstentions.
