Renewable energies instead of new nuclear power plants

Essential content

In its urgent motion, the SPD parliamentary group speaks out against plans for so-called small modular nuclear reactors (Small Modular Reactors, SMR) in Bavaria. According to the application, the state government should stop all preparations and planning for possible SMR projects and not provide any public funds for their research or development. Instead, investments should flow specifically into renewable energies, geothermal energy and energy storage. In addition, Bavaria should not support any changes to the law at the federal level that would enable the construction of new nuclear power plants. The SPD's justification is that SMR technologies have so far hardly been used commercially and, according to various institutes, are significantly more expensive than electricity from wind and solar energy. It is also argued that new nuclear power plants will not be available for many years and therefore cannot make a short-term contribution to climate protection. Questions of safety, final storage and possible locations also remain unresolved. The emergency motion was rejected with 114 votes against. 42 MPs voted in favor, including Benno Zierer (FW). There were no abstentions.
