Essential content

The EU Parliament has discussed or voted on a proposal to adjust import tariffs on goods from the United States. The background is a political agreement between the EU and the USA in 2025, which enables duty-free imports of US industrial goods. The adopted position of the EU Parliament calls for some restrictive clauses in the trade agreement. The new tariffs should only apply if the USA meets its obligations. In addition, the trade agreement is to be suspended as soon as the USA introduces new tariffs. The suspension clause could be activated if, for example, the US were to undermine the objectives of the agreement, discriminate against EU economic actors, threaten the territorial integrity, foreign or security policies of member states, or exercise economic coercion - such as by increasing tariffs on EU goods above the agreed cap of 15 percent. In addition, the end date for the agreement will be March 31, 2028, unless an extension is decided in the meantime. Attention: The voting results shown on the right only reflect the voting behavior of the 96 German MEPs and not that of all 720 MEPs. The regulation was adopted overall with 417 votes in favour, 154 against and 71 abstentions. Of the German MEPs, 61 voted for and 13 against. There were 17 abstentions.
